One of the worst major coastal flooding events on record — likely near Superstorm Sandy levels — is imminent for parts of the Eastern Seaboard as a soon-to-be bomb cyclone enters the Northeast.
This comes in the absence of blizzard conditions on the warm side of the dangerous winter storm that is walloping the Midwest and Great Lakes as it begins to spread toward the East Coast ahead of the Christmas holiday weekend.
The Fox Forecast Center said windswept rain is expected Friday in the Northeast as powerful winds blast the region with widespread 50-plus-mph wind gusts.
In addition, 60- to 70-mph gusts cannot be ruled out with the passage of the Arctic cold front Friday into Friday night. At least a few scattered power outages are likely, and more widespread outages are possible.
At the coast, strong onshore winds will lead to a significant coastal flood event along south-facing coasts, especially with the Friday morning high tide.
Flood levels are forecast to be among the top 10, and in some cases the top five, on record along the south shore of Long Island, the Jersey Shore and the Connecticut coast.

I think that was the one- There were two major storms, one was lower, one was higher and went inland quite a ways- bringing massive rains and winds- I can’t remember which one we got hit by- I think it was sandy- but might have been the other one- it went offsore, then gathered strength and came back inland if i remember right-

People listening to the likes of you are the ones who pay with their lives because they blow it off as just an ordinary storm, which it’s not, and take risks that endanger either them or the people who need to rescue them.
My only disappointment is the Hurricanes/Cyclones/100 year Storms never hit DC and give it a much needed enema!

Then there’s the ones from places like Buffalo where they have blizzard warnings up for two days, sub freezing temperatures, and 1-3 FEET of snow expected.
It all depends where you are. Some may not have it so bad in their area, for which they should be grateful, instead of looking down with contempt on people who are not so fortunate.
For us personally, I expect to lose power again this weekend as the winds and likely ice take out the trees last weekend’s storm left. Matter of fact, out electric company has sent out a notification that they expect power outages. Which is no surprise since with the number of trees here in NH, the power goes out from downed trees regularly.
But we’re ready for it so we are no “scared” or “worried”. If you are wisely prepped, you just ride it out.
This is not “normal” bad weather.
Being a former Clevelander, when that 40mph NW wind rips across Lake Erie, there’s nearly unlimited snow potential.
We are expecting freezing rain in the Seattle area tonight and into Friday. There will be lots of downed branches and powerlines and roads will be terrible. It is good to be warned. It will be warm on Saturday, but it takes the power folks a long time to restore power after a huge event like this.
I got fresh gas for the generator a month ago. Will top off the deep cycle batteries now.

It will probably be called the Christmas Ice Storm. Well, it’s Seattle - so maybe the Holiday Ice Storm. Or Holiday on Ice! Perhaps “Icepocalypse”.

I told my sister and brother to expect a few dandy lake effect events until the lake cooled off some.
It’s a big winter storm, which is the definition of normal bad weather. Take normal bad weather precautions.
I remember when it was so cold Lake Erie froze all the way across and some brave (crazy?) people walked across to Ontario.

“bomb cyclone” is a descriptive term the NWS has been using for years to describe a low pressure system that undergoes very rapid intensification due to a very quick and significant pressure drop.
It has NOTHING to to with alarmism or fear mongering. The MSM uses it as such, but the term itself is very descriptive and tells meteorologists a LOT of information with an economy of words.

You can have bad weather without a big storm system.
This is a very large and strong storm and not anywhere near the category of *normal* winter weather.
