SINGAPORE: President Halimah Yacob on Monday (Dec 19) suggested that rapists aged 50 or older should not be spared caning, in a Facebook post expressing her dismay at recent cases of children being raped in their own homes.
Under Singapore's Penal Code, a convicted rapist can be jailed up to 20 years and fined or caned.
Those 50 years old and above cannot be sentenced to caning, but can be imprisoned longer in lieu of corporal punishment.

I am well over 50, and would take the caning over a longer prison sentence. I hope I would be contrite, and offer my suffering as partial justice as well as being a deterrent.

I don’t think caning is particularly harsh. Painful, yes, but it’s not like Roman whips with pieces of glass and metal and so on ripping your flesh apart. I think I’d take the pain over the long sentence myself.

I haven’t dated anyone over 50, but I keep the caning t0 20-somethings. It loses its appeal as they creep past 30.
