The House January 6 Committee voted on Monday to recommend the Justice Department charge former President Donald Trump over the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. capitol.
The committee, assembled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), concluded its inquiry with a vote recommending Trump be charged with obstructing an official proceeding, conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to make false statements to the federal government, and inciting an insurrection.
The recommendations are largely symbolic as they carry no legal weight. The Justice Department is under no obligation to act on the committee’s recommendations.
In addition to the recommendations to the Justice Department, the committee also voted to recommend four members of Congress to the House Ethics Committee for refusing to comply with subpoenas.
The committee’s Monday session caps the work it began when it was launched in July 2021. It conducted more than 1,000 interviews and held ten highly-publicized hearings over the summer to build its case to the Justice Department and the American public that Trump is to blame for the riot on January 6.
The investigation was conducted by seven Democratic and two Republican lawmakers. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) refused to cooperate with the committee after Pelosi rejected several of his nominees to sit on the panel. GOP Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, both of whom supported impeaching Trump over January 6, later volunteered to sit on the committee alongside the Democrats.
The former president has been a vocal critic of the committee’s work, calling it a continuation of the “witch hunt” that began against him in 2016 with FBI counterintelligence probes into false allegations that Trump’s campaign colluded with Russian agents.
Prior to Monday’s vote, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung dismissed the committee as a “kangaroo court.” He called its hearings over the summer “show trials by Never Trump partisans who are a stain on this country’s history,” according to The New York Times.
In an October memo spanning 14 pages, Trump hit back at the committee that had issued a subpoena for the former president to testify.
“This memo is being written to express our anger, disappointment and complaint that with all of the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on what many consider to be a Charade and Witch Hunt,” Trump said.
Trump is facing a series of investigations from state and federal authorities, including a special counsel investigation led by Jack Smith, who was most recently a prosecutor at the International Criminal Court at The Hague. Attorney General Merrick Garland named Smith to the special counsel’s office last month. Smith has taken over responsibility for a DOJ probe into Trump over January 6, 2021, and an investigation into classified documents allegedly kept at Trump’s Florida residence at Mar-a-Lago.
its all to make it impossible for trump to legally run for president.... THEY ARE STILL SCARED SHIPLESS
Yeah, it’s all for show. The FBI and DOJ have tried every way til Wednsday to put him in jail and they’ve failed every time.
Wasted taxpayer dollars which Democrats are famous for in their demented zest to bury Trump. They didn’t beat him fairly in the election so they waste our money on congressional follies.
On the way? We're there!
“largely symbolic” yet the DOJ, corrupt as it is, will jump on it with both feet, present indictments, and proceed to arrest. Bet on it.
Now we’ll see if Merrick Garland gives them legal weight. I suspect he will make a lot of ominous-sounding noise at least, since the object of this whole exercise was to dirty-up Trump and discourage his supporters. They don’t need a grand jury for that, the court of public opinion will do just as well.
They wouldn’t have spent millions of dollars and hundreds of hours of staff and Congressional time for nothing.
This is only part of a plan to demonize and tamp down on any GOP voters. As “domestic terrorists” and “dangerous insurrectionists” who had it coming when the government turns to outright violence and re-education prison camps.
Democrats are trying to destroy this GREAT COUNTRY.
THEY HATE PRESIDENT DONALD J TRUMP BECAUSE HE IS EFFECTIVE AGAINST THEIR ANTICS.
Can you say Kangaroo? I knew you could.
.
These traitor Congress pricks have violated these people’s civil rights and pissed on their oaths to the Constitution. Justice now!!
Good plan. But many spend an hour or two every night trying to disprove “you cannot touch your tongue to your own elbow.”
The purpose of the January 6th Kangaroo Court was to manufacture charges of insurrection against Trump, to persuade the Biden DOJ to charge him, and to give them political cover for doing so. The objective is to disqualify him permanently from holding public office.
The second purpose is to disqualify certain Republican members of Congress, to put the whole government in charge of the Democrat party and their allies in the GOPe.
As well as all involved in the REAL coup attempt: The Russia collusion hoax with the #1 culprit and cancer on this country front and center - Hillary F. Clinton.
The objective is to disqualify him permanently from holding public office.
And they want to send a message to anyone who might be tempted to ‘drain the swamp’.
“..The entire J6 committee should be convicted of treason and hanged.
And then, to keep with their beloved “green” ways, turned into compost. First useful role they will have paid in their entire miserable lives.....”
^THIS^
Other than destroying every single thing they touch and stealing other peoples’ money through legalized theft (taxes) and bidenflation, they’re as useless as teats on a feral boar hog. So yeah....You’re correct: composting them would be the first useful role in all their miserable existence on planet earth.
I believe only Congress can recommend...not some dumb a... committee.
The old snake Rod Rosenstein, who originally appointed Mueller to investigate Trump, was just on CNN, trying to explain how the DOJ would likely digest this.
According him, the investigators in the DOJ aren’t going to give these legal opinions the time of day, except to review the evidence that was gathered, to see if it gives them any leads that they would then follow up, separately on their own.
He admitted that modern “special counsel” like Jack Smith don’t independently indict like they used to, and that Smith is required to simply pass his recommendation up to the AG, who would actually make the decision on whether to indict.
My expectation is there will be some overlapping charges, between these from Congress, and what Smith ultimately gives Garland, and then Garland will announce that I am only indicting Trump on the 2 (or so) charges that they both, separately put forward, but none of the others that they individually recommended.
Expect the sedition charge to be main one that they try to stick, since that is the one that could possibly prevent Trump from running for President again.
...but Schiff saw the evidence.
