WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — As the sun began to set over Purdue University Tuesday, around 100 people from the Purdue community marched to Elliott Hall of Music to protest the arrival of former United States President George W. Bush on campus.
Protestors demonstrated against the former president’s visit as well as the Bush administration's involvement with the Iraq War. Bush was invited as part of outgoing President Mitch Daniels’ final Presidential Lecture Series.
Identified media were not allowed inside the event Tuesday night.
Bush was the guest of honor as the pair shared a stage together like old times – Daniels served in the Bush administration as director of the office of management and budget – to hold “a discussion of leadership in challenging times and the responsibilities of an informed citizenship," according to a Purdue announcement.
As Bush’s arrival neared, students from the Young Democratic Socialists of America at Purdue and members from the Greater Lafayette Democratic Socialists of America responded with a call to action in hopes of “letting Purdue know we do not tolerate war criminals on our campus.”
“There was a spontaneous outburst of people who wanted to come to protest George Bush’s visit to campus tonight, and I think these are folks that remember the horribleness of the war against Iraq that he ordered, and Afghanistan,” said Bill Mullen, a retired Purdue University professor and member of the GLDSA.
“The fact that 200,000 Iraqi were needlessly killed and falsely blamed for what happened on 9/11. And several thousand American mostly working-class men and women lost their lives in that war. And those folks are here to say we reject those wars and what people to remember the truth and not to have the truth white-washed about how absolutely destructive those wars were.”

At last, a campus demonstration I can support!
Wait—I thought George W was now a good Republican because he wasn’t Trump?
Thought leftists love George W. Bush now? They spent the late 2000s calling him a genocidal war-mongering Hitler wannabe, today they generally act like he’s a saint. Same with their rhetoric with John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2021 vs. 2022.
A person I blindly campaigned for and defended.
Now, I’m of the mind he deserves to be heckled, and does not deserve to be defended.
Ah, the red flag crowd.
Idiot socialists, protesting one of their own. This doesn’t involve me.
GW is a loser
You deserve him Purdue
If the 60s are back can we tear gas them, brutally hit and jab them with night sticks and cram them into police vans without access to lawyers?
After Jan.6th that's what happens to our side.
I would like the 60s music to have new rivals but there is little hope for that. Same for a new Woodstock which would attract the Jerry Nadlers and Whoopi Goldbergs to splash in a pond naked. No thanks.
There are 40,000 students on campus. You could get 100 to protest literally anything. 0.25% of the student body, and that is not even counting all the staff and faculty.
Great post.
It’s an important fundamental reminder about American politics in the 21st century:
1. Our colleges and universities organize anti Republican President ethic. It’s completely a violation of non profit university status. Purdue is one of the most conservative schools.
2. Disparaging Republican presidents won’t help republicans move forward. Trumps repudiation of bush didn’t really help long term. Now we are pressured to repudiate trump and accept DeSantis. It won’t work. Our educational institutions are dedicated to demolishing us. They must be reformed.
Socialists don’t care about policy, only that a country allows elections with non-socialist parties.
For once I agree with the leftists. G W MORON should be put on trial for his crimes and for his treason.
Truth to Power!
Good for Bush.
After all the a55 kissing and trump hate, and obama loving that G W MORON and his family did, the left still hates him. There’s a lesson in there somewhere.
I’m against 0bama too....
Thousand points of light! Not gonna do it! Would not be prudent at this juncture!
Same here. I feel foolish for having supported him strongly in 2000 and 2004 and later. He has utterly squandered the trust we placed in him.
They should be protesting him for LYING to Putin, regarding NATO plane, in personal conversations (something he recently admitted to), but they’re too stupid to know of it.
