New Federal Rule Has Done Little to Stem Spread of ‘Ghost Guns’ (barf alert)
NYT via Seattle Times ^ | 18 dec 2022 | Glenn Thrish

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden celebrated the adoption of a federal rule in August that cracked down on the online sale of untraceable components for weapons known as ghost guns as a major step in stemming gun violence. But the rule has done little to stop the sale of key parts used to make deadly homemade firearms, according to officials and gun control groups.

The rule, among the most significant executive actions Biden has taken on a core campaign promise, clarified the definition of a firearm under federal law to better regulate modern semi-automatic weapons. That in turn paved the way for regulating ready-made kits, which include all the parts needed to assemble a workable firearm in under an hour.

The move was a centerpiece of the administration’s broader initiative to address the proliferation of illegal weapons driving an increase in mass shootings and violent crime — an effort highlighted by the passage of Biden’s sweeping, if limited, bipartisan gun deal in June. But because the rule was created through executive action, rather than a statute validated by Congress, it has given companies confidence that they can keep selling individual gun parts.

Dozens of online retailers are still selling core components used to make ghost guns, also known as privately manufactured firearms, according to research by Everytown for Gun Safety, an advocacy group founded by Michael Bloomberg, a former mayor of New York City. Many have adopted the narrowest possible interpretation of the rule, continuing to sell so-called 80% frames and receivers, which require simple alterations to become operational.

Right.... I've seen what people do in the name of 'home improvement', and "simple alterations" in 80% gear is rocket science for a LOT of people.

“...parts used to make deadly homemade firearms.”

Pretty much all firearms are potentially deadly, homemade or factory made. NYT writer just pushing the narrative.

I doubt that any Big Media “reporter” has the mechanical skill to complete an 80% receiver into a working rifle.

SHALL NOT INFRINGE. Rules do not supercede enumerated Constitutional rights!

The impetus for the Second Amendment was some politicians wanted to take away the citizens muzzle loaders.

Criminals usually don’t build firearms, they steal them.

I was in home depot and lowes last week and BOTH of them are still selling the required parts to make Ghost Guns!!! In my Improvised Munitions Handbook, Department of the Army 1969, it gives explicit instructions to make a 9mm pistol and a 12 gauge Shotgun from Basic Supplies found in every hardware store in America. YES Dangerous GHOST GUNS. It has a whole lot more stuff also!!!

The Polymer 80 handgun kits can be done in 15 minutes with a dremel and hand drill. They use off the shelf Glock magazines.

But we know what these clowns want. ALL gun parts registered, forbidden and eventually confiscated.

No one even points to the 100% receivers that can be purchased (certain paperwork and checks notwithstanding), allowing anyone with less than 3 thumbs to Lego up a rifle with whatever parts suit their fancy.

But that’s the hidden bit of this - lump in all the build pars with the EVIL 80% receivers. Note the recent laws/regulations in some places concerning upper receivers. It’ll get to BCGs and barrels in no time.

All weapons should be legal. Period. This entire ghost gun thing, name included, is a farce. A hunk of metal is not a weapon, and even when a hunk of metal becomes a gun, it’s still legal under the constitution. These Marxists don’t give a damn about crime, they are the criminals. Just look at the entire supply chain they have established on the southern border to smuggle sex slaves and drugs for their profit and use.

______
I think all those nasty, evil people selling 80%’s also have a letter from the ATF determining that the 80%’s comply with “the rule”. ATF is just changing the rules, again.
Just like we elected them to do. Oh, wait.

I thought it would be cool to build one myself, but it's a lot cheaper to just buy a Glock manufactured by Glock.

Urban kids under the age of 21 don't seem to have much difficulty buying non-ghost guns without any background checks at all. (And that's been illegal since the Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed.)

Total BS. Alleged ghost guns used in crime are insignificant ... use their own stats and you will find there few or none each year.

I don’t own a 3-D printer, any fancy lathes or milling machines.

Just a drill press, a bearing press and a whole lot of hand tools.

Taught my son how to make a gun (we called it a small cannon) with standard tools in the garage but we did have to buy a special reamer.

With a 1/2 inch ball bearing he put a 3/4 inch hole in a solid brick garage wall, yes I did make him repair the wall.

If some savage sitting in a cave in Afghanistan can make an AK-47 with hand tools what makes the government think a competent machinist couldn’t make an AR-15?
