Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Sunday sidestepped questions about whether he’d leave the Democratic Party after being asked about his comments regarding his serving in the Senate as an “independent voice.”
Manchin avoided saying outright if he’d join fellow centrist Sen. Krysten Sinema (I-Ariz.), who shocked Washington earlier this month by announcing that she would become an Independent.
The West Virginia Democrat instead criticized hyper-partisanship in Congress and said he would wait and see how the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the Inflation Reduction Act “plays out” before making a decision about his affiliation.
“If people are trying to stop something from doing so much good because of politics, thinking somebody else will get credit for it, let’s see how that plays out. And then I’ll let you know later what I decide to do,” Manchin told CBS “Face the Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan.

He would just do the bernie thing like the rest of the “independents” in the senate. An R needs to run as a Dem in those states.
Hmmm...that’s a different answer....or was it just a...”if I do, I’ll let you know”...in other words...stop asking.
Manny ain’t going nowhere. The RAT gig has always worked good for him. He’s not about to give it up.
Unfortunately, we can't even find an "R" that's REALLY and "R" - e.g. Romney, Murkowski, Collins, etc.
Right. It’s a distinction without a difference. An Independent who caucuses with the Democrats and votes with the Democrats might as well be a Democrat.
We’re all holding our breaths until we turn blue (sic)./sarc
He wants to get reelected.
Manchin comes from a red state. If he stepped down we would take that seat. It’s important to remember democrats are the party of criminals, liars, gullible fools... and ‘sniffers’. Do you really want to stand with them?
Doesn't matter, the Putz will still caucus with the Dims on most issues, including voting for Senate Leadership.
If he wants to get re-elected he will do what he has to I understand than Manson uh Manchin gave Biden’s Agenda a boost and cut the coal industry’s throat this year.
Does this mean a Republican will defeat Manchin in a contest or does it mean that Manchin needs to “get religion” and create some drama move to “the Right” before the next election?
When, oh when will the good people of the Great State of West Virginia get it?
Manchin pretends to be a "moderate", but he always finds a way to be the obedient Dem, but only after a little performance art.
When, oh when will the good people of the Great State of West Virginia get it?
also,Sinema.
The Republican Party doesn’t need another RINO. Republicans need model Democrats to attack. Manchin is and always has been such a model. Voting for the Inflation Reduction Act is proof positive Manchin is such a Democrat. There no place for him in America, let alone the Republican Party.
He wants to get reelected of course , but West Virginia has becoming increasingly Republican over the past number of years. It’s hard to see being a Democrat in West Virginia being any advantage to his election.
Then again, maybe he is personally popular in West Virginia for reasons most of us don’t know about. I think he comes from a coal mining family, which might resonate with many West virginians.
In WV they know their own.
Manchin hangs on here out of
a) Habit,
b) Memory of Byrd’s pork.
Both senators Manchin & Capito are trying to be the reincarnation of Byrd. As time goes on this memory fads in its desirability.
Happy to say Manchin is wearing out his welcome. The GOP usually can’t find a good candidate to run. The current AG Morrissey almost beat him and that’s with Manchin’s constant carpetbagger accusations. His two like challengers Mooney and the current governor-Justice; Mooney has said he will & Justice is just talking about it in the press. Mooney is vulnerable to carpetbagger accusations. Justice has been an OK governor, but he sounds & looks like a doofus - is very obese. Also, he has some huge business ethics problems in his past.
Not as far as the Dems are concerned. Uneasy lies the head that stole the crown. Their censorship wall has a gaping hole now, and they have to choose between demonizing the two Senators who p!ssed them off so bad, and biting the bullet and pretending to like them. They’re not good at that.
Precisely!
“....Does this mean a Republican will defeat Manchin in a contest or does it mean that Manchin needs to “get religion” and create some drama move to “the Right” before the next election? ....”
He can be defeated with the right candidate. Definition of “right candidate” is becoming less stringent as Manchin becomes less popular. “Getting religion & creating drama moving to the right ..” has always saved his bacon in the past, it may not work this time.
His immediate family own some furniture and carpet stores in Fairmont & Farmington. He started out in life as a coal broker (Enersystems coal brokerage). He gets a lot of “credit” for his portrayal of “care & concern” during the Sago Mine disaster (2006) during his first term as governor. I think since Sago is not far from Fairmont\Farmington he was actually sincere.
My late father who rarely ever had anything good to say about a WV democrat said this about Manchin - “He’s not anti-business!”.
