Japan lifts a longtime restriction to allow a major defense buildup

TOKYO β€” Japan has made a significant policy change to allow it to get the ability to strike other nations, a move widely seen as a major step toward rearming the nation more than seven decades since it demilitarized after World War II.

As Japan's relations with China worsen and the threat it perceives from its much larger neighbor heightens, the Japanese government gave a green light Friday to proposals it has been debating sporadically since at least 1956.

Japan had avoided obtaining strike capabilities, so as not to violate Japan's post-war constitution, which renounces the right β€” and the means β€” to wage war, and to avoid provoking its neighbors.

Japan lifts a longtime restriction to allow a major defense buildup

What a surprise. Nobody can rely on international agreements or that allies will help. Also, here comes nuclear weapons proliferation, as a defense against aggressive neighbors.

If the Japanese want to protect themselves they’d better develop an independent nuclear retaliatory capability, a Japanese finger on a Japanese bomb. Relying on the US is no longer an option. This is a good thing as we have wasted enough trillions on protecting Japan and South Korea. It is impossible for the Japanese to develop a convention force that could ever be strong enough to deter a determined Chinese or Russian assault. If de Gaulle could do it for the same reasons, why not Japan?

A nuclear Japan could be realized in record time.

Our shenanigans in Ukraine will light a fire that will not be put out so easily.

“Our shenanigans in Ukraine will light a fire that will not be put out so easily”

By “our” you mean Russias shenanigans, right?

Yes, your, Russian shenanigans light a fire, but that has resulted in Xi being cautious of using military force against the Republic of China or against Japan

Its Putin's invasion of a European country for territorial gain, that lit the fire.

I recently spent two weeks in the ROK.I was escorted by my Korean-American girlfriend who lived there until she was 40. We did a day trip up to the DMZ and I wanna tell ya that was,for me at least,a shocking experience. We went into one of the invasion tunnels that the North dug and it went *right up to* the border.Absolutely incredible!

Knowing that China (Kim's puppet master) was poised to attack with a million troops at the drop of a hat was a very disturbing thought.

Japan's in a very similar situation. They'd be foolish *not* to prepare.

Our weakness (Biden) and China’s encouragement at the Olympics manipulated Putin’s desire for increasing Russian territory through invasion. Diplomatic failure on many levels.

One short visit certainly doesn’t make me an expert but the security was incredible.I must have had my passport checked a half dozen times by ROK soldiers before we were allowed to get off the bus. My girlfriend wasn’t checked as closely...probably because she spoke to the soldiers in Korean. Although I suppose they could have suspected her of being a North Korean spy! ;-)

Who cares? Why send our money & weapons?

How quickly will our tech mysteriously end up with enemies?

American weapons help Ukrainians defend themselves from Putin’s aggression.

For the price of 1/10th of the annual budget of the Pentagon, you get Putin too engrossed to thwart American plans elsewhere. And Xi gets scared off invading the republic of China
