The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill during its lame-duck session Thursday in a last-ditch effort to allow Puerto Rico to “decolonize.”
The bill, which passed 233-191 with support from 16 Republicans and has very little chance of passing the Senate, would allow the U.S. territory to hold a first-ever binding referendum on whether to become a state or gain independence. It would ultimately offer the Puerto Rico voters three options: statehood, independence, or independence with free association.

Pity the Left cannot demarxise.
I believe it has beeen longstanding law that Puerto Rico’s future is in its own hands already. They have had votes before, and chosen the status quo. Not sure what this new “law” is about.
“Independence with free association” is... what they have now? Or are the Democrats trying to tell 3 million Americans that they shouldn’t have citizenship?
We should cut them loose. We don’t want that welfare country sucking America’s teat any longer. And as a colonial territory, we get nothing from them except people with bad attitudes and their bills. They should never be a state.
Cut em adrift.
WHO WILL STEAL THE ELECTION IN PUERTO RICO? I can take ONE guess.
>> They have had votes before, and chosen the status quo. Not sure what this new “law” is about. <<
When given the choice between status quo, statehood or independence, they have overwhelmingly chosen the status quo. In the more recent past, they’ve resorted to trying to refuse the option for status quo. I don’t know what the “independence with free association” is, but my guess is Puerto Ricans will understand it to mean that their American citizenship can be revoked, or that their children won’t receive it. So the idea is really “you allow us to impose statehood on you, so we can get two more Senators and 5 more Representatives, or we’ll punish you by deporting the very island you live on.”
The US took possession of four Spanish colonies at the end of the Spanish-American War: The Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Guam.
We decolonized the Philippines and Cuba by granting them independence. We should decolonize Puerto Rico by doing the same which will cut them off from the special tax treatment the Puerto Ricans and companies in Puerto Rico receive under the tax code.
Isn’t independence with free association simply mean that they get all the welfare perks with none of the taxes?
If they become a state, they have to pay federal income taxes, right? Guess that might give a few people pause, but most are on federal welfare of some type or another so I bet a vote will fail.
“decolonize”
Oh, that decolonize.
Learn something new every day.

It would help clean up NYC, Allentown PA, and Reading PA a bunch...
How about ask Americans if we want to simply grant Puerto Rico independence, ship all Puerto Ricans home, without US citizenship, wash our hands of this former Spanish colony. A simple cost-benefit calculation would favor giving them independence.
Cuba was decolonized and went commie. Philippines was decolonized and went autocratic. Guam tipped over. Puerto Rico is all we have left of San Juan Hill, and it has become the swamp on steroids.
This, along with a multitude of other things, was predicted to be attempted by the Democrats on the way out. Remember, we’re still waiting for the referrals for prosecution from the fake J6 committee.
I still have money on the Senate eliminating the filibuster. . .
Give PR one choice, Bye!
If it becomes independent the Chinese will establish a naval base and an air force base there within months. And if they declare independence it should be understood that their US citizenship disappears on “independence” day.
It’s about votes...in Florida,New York,New Jersey,etc.
It’s probably about hoping Peurto Rico becomes a state for 2 more democrat electoral votes.
