Probably computerized monitoring and trading is the reason. These programs look at key stocks and a few other bellwether financial products and if a trend is detected, up or down, the computers initiate buys and sells whichever is appropriate. These ‘trends’ are minuscule, plus or minus .001%, but the number of stocks bought/sold are in the millions of shares. If the computer trades a million shares and makes a 1% profit that is tens of thousands USD all collected in a fraction of a second.
