Republican support for Trump 2024 run collapsing, poll shows

GOP backing for former President Donald Trump’s third consecutive White House bid has fallen apart over the past several months, with most Republican voters saying they’d prefer another candidate to carry on his policies in 2024, according to a poll released Tuesday.

While 31% of Republican and Republican-leaning independents want Trump, 76, to run again in two years, 61% say they would rather have another GOP standard-bearer, the USA Today/Suffolk University survey found.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 44, is their preferred choice.

DeSantis, who cruised to re-election Nov. 8, leads Trump by 23 percentage points — 56% to 33% — in a head-to-head primary matchup, the poll shows.

Nearly two-thirds of Republican and GOP-leaning voters (65%) say the governor should run for the White House in 2024, with just 24% saying he shouldn’t.

“Republicans and conservative independents increasingly want Trumpism without Trump,” David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, told USA Today.

Trump, who is facing state and federal investigations over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and for keeping classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort, has seen enthusiasm among Republicans for a third White House try plummet in recent months, falling from 60% support in July to 56% in October to 47% now.

The former president has also seen his favorability rating fall among the Republican faithful — skidding from 75% in October to 64% in December.

In a hypothetical 2024 matchup, Trump lags behind President Biden by 47% to 40%, the poll found.

But DeSantis tops Biden 47% to 43% in a hypothetical 2024 election matchup.

The survey also showed that Biden’s approval rating has improved slightly, climbing a point to 46% from October, while his unfavorable rating fell a point to 50%.

So a poll of “republican leaning independents” is our standard now?

We can't win elections without them.

If we just polled FReepers, Trump would win by 90%. Unfortunately, you need more than FReepers to win elections.

Y’all can’t HAVE Trumpism without Trump!

Fair point. So I suppose a better way to say it is that people want a lot of the policies Trump supports without all the other stuff that goes into "Trumpism."

No, it’s support for the GOP that has plunged.

Exactly!

If the poll is a teeny-bit accurate, then the barrage of Never-Trump messaging from RINO leaders might be working.

It's the barrage of losing elections that is changing things.

The Republican party DOES NOT WANT Mr. Trump to be its nominee.
Exactly how its leadership decides to accomplish this remains to be seen, but my guess is that they will keep him off the primary ballots by any means possible.

Time will tell.

Have the liberals and Fox news announced that Biden has won a second term yet?

The real question is will Trump run as an independent if he loses the primaries and how many votes will he take with him if he does.

Never underestimate Trump's -- or the Republicans overall -- ability to screw up a winnable race.

If Trump runs, the left's fraud machine coupled with his pushing away Republican voters will ensure a loss.

If Trump runs as an independent -- which I'm convinced he would do if he lost the nomination -- Republicans will welcome President Newsom.

Sorry, but this is a Push Poll story... nothing more.

Make or create a poll to say what you want, report it with the intent of influencing others...

This is nonsense.

Nomination isn’t decided by independents, though they can have some say in open primary states.. its chosen by the party members.... This poll is just gaslighting.

The merry ballot thieves will basically roll him EVERYWHERE except Florida. Reference: Kari Lake.

Keri Lake lost her election. Ron DeSantis won his in a massive 20 point landslide.

Trump is the only one with a pair BIG ENOUGH to stomp these SOBs.

What state that Trump lost in 2020 does he flip in 2024? And he needs to flip THREE of them!

He can't even flip Georgia. He's poison in Georgia which is why Walker asked him to stay away from the runoff, and Trump agreed.

And if the GOP candidate can't win Georgia then seriously, what path to the White House does he have?

Answer: Donald Trump has no path to the White House.

Oh, my. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. It would be a disaster, something like how former president Teddy Roosevelt’s independent run in 1912 gave the country Woodrow Wilson.

There is an old saying. Do not do what your opponent wants you to do. And the Democrats would love to see Trump run as an independent. Of course this is all idle speculation, as I don’t believe Trump has mentioned it.

The "barrage of Never-Trump messaging from RINO leaders" isn't the cause. It is Trump's own words and statements that people are reading/hearing for themselves that are doing this.

"DeSanctimonious" and going after Youngkin because his name "sounds Chinese" alienated a lot of people, and it was a completely self-inflicted wound.

The only term limits being discussed (or implemented) is holding Trump to one term. I’m getting sick of it.

Then God help us if the party chooses Donald Trump because he will lose.

Don’t assume Trump supporters are automatically going to support desantis. They won’t.

Trump’s biggest problem is that the middle of the road Republicans and Independents HATE him.
I have witnessed it first hand in my office. White middle aged males who have voted Republican for years did not vote for Trump in 2020. They literally left the spot on the ballot blank. It is a personal issue. They just DO NOT LIKE HIM.

I don't think Trump will run as an independent. But I do think that if he loses, he may well not endorse whatever other Republican won the nomination. If he does, it will probably be a very weak, backhanded endorsement that will imply he doesn't really care if his supporters vote for the nominee or not.

I do hold out a slim hope that he could pivot, get the keynote address at the Republican Convention, and come out with a blazing endorsement for the nominee. It would likely help his own popularity immensely within the GOP if he did.

But that's a slim hope.
