Republican support for Trump 2024 run collapsing, poll shows

GOP backing for former President Donald Trump’s third consecutive White House bid has fallen apart over the past several months, with most Republican voters saying they’d prefer another candidate to carry on his policies in 2024, according to a poll released Tuesday.

While 31% of Republican and Republican-leaning independents want Trump, 76, to run again in two years, 61% say they would rather have another GOP standard-bearer, the USA Today/Suffolk University survey found.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 44, is their preferred choice.

DeSantis, who cruised to re-election Nov. 8, leads Trump by 23 percentage points — 56% to 33% — in a head-to-head primary matchup, the poll shows.

Nearly two-thirds of Republican and GOP-leaning voters (65%) say the governor should run for the White House in 2024, with just 24% saying he shouldn’t.

“Republicans and conservative independents increasingly want Trumpism without Trump,” David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, told USA Today.

Trump, who is facing state and federal investigations over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and for keeping classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort, has seen enthusiasm among Republicans for a third White House try plummet in recent months, falling from 60% support in July to 56% in October to 47% now.

The former president has also seen his favorability rating fall among the Republican faithful — skidding from 75% in October to 64% in December.

In a hypothetical 2024 matchup, Trump lags behind President Biden by 47% to 40%, the poll found.

But DeSantis tops Biden 47% to 43% in a hypothetical 2024 election matchup.

The survey also showed that Biden’s approval rating has improved slightly, climbing a point to 46% from October, while his unfavorable rating fell a point to 50%.

It’s an obvious propaganda ploy but it seems to be working, even here on FR.

No Republican can flip the states you speak of. There would need to be significant election reform in Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan for ANY Republican to have a shot at the Presidency.

It wasn't fraud. It was Trump.

Arizona was a red state until Trump pissed off those Arizona Republicans who sent McCain to Washington for 30 years. They liked McCain! Kari Lake told them to go the hell away and so they did.

Georgia IS a bright red state until Trump picked a fight with their popular governor, pissing off the Georgians who support him and then dropping a very uninspiring senate candidate in their lap.

The Democrats have demonstrated that they CAN lose PA, WI, and MI.

A Republican could conceivably win in 24, just not Donald Trump.

What is that supposed to mean? Hate to tell you this but your god Desantis was not around to fight in the revolutionary war, I know you think he walks on water (we all saw the”on the eighth day” ad but he did not fight in the revolution against King George.

I don't think bringing up Keating 5 McCain bolsters your argument that it wasn't fraud. Especially when the county that couldn't count straight was involved in 2020 and 2022. It just shows the level of corruption that the Arizona voters will put up with.

Isn't it funny that DeSantis narrowly won against a disaster of a candidate in 2018. Fixes the vote counting in Broward county and now wins by a wide margin. Broward went from the perpetually late return county that couldn't count to getting the count done on time with no fuss.

The Democrats have demonstrated that they CAN lose PA, WI, and MI.

In state wide elections I see no evidence of that. Is it my imagination or did incumbent Senator Ron Johnson win by a squeaker in Wisconsin? He is a good Senator with solid conservative principles. He should have won in a landslide.
