The Gibsons have collected the over $36 million owed them. Sadly, David Gibson and “Grandpa” Allyn Gibson did not live to see this day. By stretching out the appeals Oberlin College waited them out, but the rest of the family survives. We wish the Gibson family well.

Most damage awards, which is what liability payments are, are not taxable. Any amount specifically for lost income, might be.

“What a snarky and unnecessary comment.”

Life sucks. But if they want to help prevent other families from going through this ordeal, they SHOULD DO just as I said.

Political campaigns are remarkably inefficient for that task. Bloomberg burned through half-a-million dollars with nothing to show for it.

If they want to protect people like themselves, a legal defense fund for people in similar situations would make more sense. Better for the money to go to conservative lawyers than lefty TV stations and web sites, which is where most campaign money (after slimy advisors) goes.

This only proves that Push Back does solve problems.

Notice what is not in the statement: An apology. Oberlin College still appears not to understand or accept what it did wrong. It considers itself the victim.

Oberlin students, faculty, and administration seem to have agreed that Gibson's Bakery employees were racist for responding to the theft of the bakery's products, physical assault & battery, and other crimes committed by a black criminal and his two black female friends. Oberlin leftists sided with the bad guys, because of their skin color. Of course.

Here's Wikipedia's account of the 2016 shoplifting incident.

On Wednesday, November 9, 2016, underage black Oberlin College student Jonathan Aladin attempted to purchase a bottle of wine using a fake identification card.[11][12] Store clerk Allyn D. Gibson, a son and grandson of the owners,[8] rejected the fake ID. Gibson noticed that the student was concealing two other bottles of wine inside his jacket.[11][8] According to a police report, Gibson told Aladin that he was contacting the police; Gibson then pulled out his phone to take a photo of the student, but Aladin slapped it away, striking Gibson's face.[13] Aladin ran out of the store, but Gibson followed and then grabbed and held onto him outside. This all took place after Aladin had also assaulted store owner David Gibson.[8] Oberlin students Cecelia Whettstone and Endia Lawrence, friends of the shoplifter, joined the scuffle.[8] When the police arrived, they witnessed Gibson lying on the ground with the three students punching and kicking him.[13] The police report stated that Gibson sustained a swollen lip, several cuts, and other minor injuries.[9][14] The police arrested the students, charging all three with assault and Aladin with robbery as well. In August 2017, the three students pleaded guilty, stating that they believed that Gibson's actions were justified and were not racially motivated.[13][15][16] Their plea deals carried no jail time in exchange for restitution, the public statement, and a promise of future good behavior.[15][17] From their trial courtroom, Assistant Dean of Students Antoinette Myers sent dean of students and vice-president Meredith Raimondo a text message: "I hope we rain fire and brimstone on that store."

Job applicants who admit to graduating from Oberlin should be asked where they stood on the Gibson's Bakery issue. Prospective Oberlin students should carefully consider whether or not they want to be associated with such a college.

It's a shame that Oberlin was not literally sued into oblivion, but this result is vastly better than nothing.

I’ve been following this at Legal Insurrection since the beginning.

The jury awarded Gibson’s attorney fees from Oberlin.

Not sure about all of the post-trial Gibson fees generated by Oberlin’s endless delays and appeals.

Since the verdict years ago, over $4,000 per day in interest accrued.

Heh, heh.

What a pity the actual instigators walked. Meredith Raimondo is now safely ensconced at Oglethorpe University; Julio Reyes was promoted within the Oberlin staff. How Oberlin Bullies Thrived. As the article states, there was no apology, and there was no apology because these people knew they could get away with it and have.

The ways of karma are older than time.

I’ve never been deeply wronged in this manner but if I was in place of the Gibsons I’d use the money to wage a campaign of public relations all-out war, terror and harassment against the college and every member of its governing board. I’d pay people to stand in the front of the college 24/7/365 with big flashing signs detailing the sins of the college, and continuously honking the loudest air horn available (they’d have to wear ear protection).

Every second of every minute of every day, until I die or the money runs out.

You’re thinking right about now, what an obsessive self-centered nut, and you may be right about that but there is a method to my admitted madness. I believe this particular madness is why I stay out of trouble, because karma ripples through time in both directions. Probable future events reflect back and alter present events.

I believe the karmic influence of my intention to inflict consequences has protected me from situations which could trigger consequences. That and my own fear of those consequences, which leads me to be more decent and de-escalatory than I might be naturally.

It’s a weird thing. One comes of age and finds the beast inside which must never come out of its cage. One then finds the beast is trainable, like a big vicious dog.

I believe at some level of consciousness our beasts are as obvious as our noses. At that level karma is transparent. We are so blind and dumb in this flesh.

I see your point. If money was no object, I might do the same.
