Brevard County School District, held a heated meeting Thursday that offered an unvarnished and often disturbing glimpse into the state of its classrooms.
“On an everyday basis I am being attacked, scratched, headbutted, pushed, hit,” teacher Alicia Kelderhouse said. “I’ve had my hair pulled. I’ve had my throat gone for on multiple occasions.”
One teacher said her kids look at their devices “hundreds” of times each day and keep their earbuds in while lessons are in progress.
“Our students cannot look away from their phones,” she said. “They cannot stop texting.”
Ivey said classrooms have descended into chaos because kids no longer fear consequences.
“As a result, we are losing teachers en masse,” he said, calling disruptive students “clowns” who are impeding the education of their classmates.
Several speakers criticized Ivey at Thursday’s meeting, and highlighted that suspensions are in disproportionately high numbers to black students.
“Our children are not clowns,” said a local NAACP member. “They are not snot-nosed.” He accused Ivey of using “scare tactics” and “bullying” in pushing for disciplinary clampdowns.
Another speaker said the district should emphasize diversity, equity and inclusion in any new behavior code.
One parent argued that disruptive students — regardless of race — should be removed from classrooms.
“If you are throwing a chair in a classroom, you do not belong there,” she said. “I’m sorry. If you can’t behave, that’s not my child’s fault. My child’s education should not be hindered because that child doesn’t know how to behave. And by that child I don’t mean black, white, Hispanic or any other thing. I mean the child who wasn’t taught how to behave.”

Hillary must run their video systems.
“Come out from among them and be ye separate.”
We did. There is no salt and light to preserve or redeem the public school system for them it would seem. They need a miracle. We’ve been in a civil war for many years and few have a clue out there.
Brevard. A very red district.
Breeding grounds for more Darrell Brooks’.
I actually agree with this. One time my kid got a zero for being late on an assignment. Once you have a zero, you need to score at least a 90 on the next 4 assignments to wind up with a passing grade (70+). For a marginal student, a zero tells him that he will not pass, no matter what he subsequently does.
Misidentification on both our parts. I’m Oregon redneck raised, and we had basicallly no minorities. I now live in rural Ontario, and so while I do encounter more minorities than in Oregon, none of them are ghetto African Americans or southern African Americans, or real African Americans who are recent imports to Canada.
My experience with African African and Carribbeans are different than yours—but as Canada gets its pick of the commonwealth (and as people who are looking for a kicked back life of ease tend to leave rural Canada) I at times guess.
> One time my kid got a zero for being late on an assignment. <
I see your point. But that’s a problem with an individual teacher’s grading system. And it’s a serious problem. A late assignment should be penalized. But not nearly to the extent of being worth zero.
Let me give you an example of why that 50% minimum policy is so bad.
Let’s say a class has three major tests in a semester. The first test is usually the easiest. Let’s say some kid scores 80% on that test.
That kid can now completely stop working in that course. He gets a 0% on the second test, which is raised to 50%. Same thing on the third test.
That kid now has an average of 60%. He passes even though he knows next to nothing about the subject. I’ve seen that happen many times.
“ Of course this is a hit piece of Florida. Broward is the most liberal county in the state, isn’t it? Anyway, this is not a problem that is exclusive to Florida. In every school system nation-wide, where the school is not allowed to implement any behavior and discipline protocols, the inmates are running the asylum. When there is no punishment for misbehavior, violence, etc, you are going to get more of the same.….”

True, it’s well beyond Florida. BALTIMORE HAS PARTIALLY SOLVED THIS PROBLEM. They apparently simply mark the students “present” whether they’re there in class or not and give them passing grades. Of course the problem isn’t “solved” but simply avoided. Sometimes the juice is simply not worth the squeez.
And if a teacher enters less than 50% for a student’s score, the computer automatically changes it to 50%.
I might go for a 50% floor if the student makes an attempt. Not for doing nothing, though.
60 is the new “barely passing” grade?
When I was in school, it was 90+=A, 80+=B, 70+=C, under 70=F
ok, I read the article ...where and how is the “shell-shock” happening?
1968 through to May 1970, within my beloved Stamford High School, Stamford, CT, there were: gang fights -baseball bats, chains, switchblades, zip guns, between white, black, and Puerto Rican students ; bombs and bomb threats, arson fires, rapes and murders in the building, But no one suffered the Webster’s Dictionary definition of “shell shock”!
I look back on that as being immersed in the environment of SouthEast Asia, before I got there.
Seems to me that decent Americans need only to watch andwait while woke America implodes.

I guess that’s another way of saying be sure to give partial credit. And that’s a fair point. I know teachers who refused to give partial credit. You either got the right answer, or you didn’t. Maybe that’s defendable in college. But not in high school.
I taught physics for most of my career, and I loved giving partial credit. A student could get every problem wrong on a test, and still easily pass as long he was on the right track.
However, that’s not what our school board was saying. If a kid shows up and puts his name on the paper, that’s 50%.
“”Those teachers should get extra combat pay.””
Teachers are the cause and the problem, they became a national union and took over education and nationalized it, and became one of the largest democrat voting blocks and financial supporters.
Actually one needs only to average 87.5 on the next four assignments. Three nineties will balance out an 82.5
I don’t know where you are, but outside of graduate school, C’s and D’s make degrees. I’ve seen loads of 100 point scales, and can’t recall a 60 ever being a straight F. If all they need is a d minus, then they will need to average 75, which if the D’s run from 60-69, would be a middling C. Writing something brief that is somehow related to a class is often enough to justify that now days.
I’ve been graded what might be judged excessively hard on at least three occasions, but they have all been good learning experiences. My only C in grad school is now a subject I have a course in that is often reckoned as my best course.
A couple things contributed to the C, but most notably being a smart-@$$ in the term paper.
When I was in school, it was 90+=A, 80+=B, 70+=C, under 70=F
You went to school before there were D’s?
You must be old. Can’t have Dinosaur’s without D’s.
In grad school it is often A,B, F-—and I hear the same for nursing—but most places have D’s and D’s are passing.
While a C average is often required for passing, and a higher average for other things, Bs in some subjects can balance out Ds in others—or enough higher Cs can raise a few Ds
Those teachers need to learn how to code.
This is the county north of me. It is called the space Coast. It has Cape Canaveral Cocoa Beach, Melbourne and an AF base. I don’t think there’s a lot of Black people but I could be wrong.
