A Russian court has sentenced the opposition politician Ilya Yashin to eight and a half years in prison, in the most high-profile case to date of a Russian dissident being jailed for opposing the invasion of Ukraine.
Yashin was tried on charges of spreading false information meant to discredit the Russian army, under a law introduced after Russia launched its invasion, due to a series of posts in May about the murder and torture of Ukrainian civilians by Russian troops in the town of Bucha.
“Expressing hatred of the political system of the Russian Federation and realising that he is a public person … Yashin created a real threat to the formation of a negative attitude towards the armed forces of the Russian Federation,” read the verdict, which was delivered in Moscow’s Meshchansky district court.
A veteran of Russia’s anti-Putin opposition, Yashin was one of a small group of vocal opponents to the war who chose not to leave the country, saying earlier this year that he believed that “anti-war voices sound louder and more convincing if the person remains in Russia”.
In a courtroom speech this week, Yashin said: “I must remain in Russia, I must speak the truth loudly, and I must stop the bloodshed at any cost. It physically pains me to think how many people have been killed in this war, how many lives have been ruined, and how many families have lost their homes. You cannot be indifferent. And I swear I do not regret anything.”
He added: “It’s better to spend 10 years behind bars as an honest man than quietly burn with shame over the blood spilled by your government.”
Yashin joins a small group of other prominent dissenters who have been imprisoned for speaking out against the war.

Ohhh how I wish Putin was running the USA so we could get such glorius “freedom” here! /s
Ilya Yashin sentenced to over 8 years for condemning the Russian army in Bucha
Looks like he’s being treated better than the J6 detainees, many of whom, 2 years later, are still not charged, much less convicted, of any specific crime.
Maybe Biden can release some more hard core Russian prisoners in exchange for Ilya.
Well then its okay, he's sentenced to 8 years in a russian prison for speech on youtube. Okay
Sounds like he was spreading Kiev’s disinfo not just protesting the war
Not that I agree with an 8 year sentence
Bucha was almost certainly staged by Kiev… the murder victims in Bucha bore white arm bands indicating at least passive acceptance of Russia when its troops were there…which made them collaborators by Kiev standards and there was zero benefit to Russia of executing civilians and doing a staged body dump every 10 feet along a street …but Kiev benefits by sending a warning to other occupied towns not to cooperate…and gets a world stage to blame Russia for war crimes
This propo was so amateur and obvious it’s discouraging to see how many fell for it ..not to mention no justice for the dead
LOL, stop drinking russian cool-aid.
Not to mention that the mayor of Bucha made no mention of it until 3 days after Ukraine moved back in. This was Ukraine killing “collaborators” as they have done many other times and also with prisoners.
The reich did this.
Right, so ALL the surviving residents of Bucha are lying when they say the russians executed their loved ones, sometimes right in front of them. Video cctv footage of russian soldiers leading tied up men to execution is a lie. Drone footage showing the bodies lying there, with russian vehicles parked around the corner is a lie. Satellite pictures of bodies lying there is a lie. You're ridiculous.
They sound like Holocaust deniers dont they?
“This was Ukraine killing “collaborators” as they have done many other times and also with prisoners.”
The killing of ‘collaborators’ is an ANNOUNCED POLICY of Ukraine, and the definition of ‘collaborator’ includes doing things like talking to the Russian occupiers about organizing food deliveries.
“This propo was so amateur and obvious it’s discouraging to see how many fell for it”
No one informed fell for it, but what choice do the Neocon supporters have in this case, other than to appear to have fallen for it?
If the Uke army re-occupied my town after the Russians pulled out, and wanted me to appear on a video production blaming the Russians for killing townspeople…I might just cooperate enthusiastically to save myself and my family.
One does not say “ no” to Slava Ukraini troops.
WOW, what honor and courage:
“It’s better to spend 10 years behind bars as an honest man than quietly burn with shame over the blood spilled by your government.”
Right, and in all this time, since April, no one has whispered anything to any of the press anonymously. That's how crazy your theory is!
Did russian soldiers execute civilians in Bucha? Or are you one of the crazies who denies russians have committed atrocities?
