Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
Seattle Times ^ | November 24, 2022 | Julie Cresswell

...Its stock has slumped nearly 83% in the past year. Sales, which the company had expected to rise as much as 33% this year, are now likely to show only minor growth....

In late October, the company said it was laying off 200 people, or 19% of its workforce. And four top executives have departed in recent months, including the chief financial officer, the chief supply chain officer and the chief operating officer, whom Beyond Meat had suspended after his arrest on allegations that he bit another man’s nose in a parking garage altercation.

What investors and others are debating now is whether Beyond Meat’s struggles are specific to the company or a harbinger of deeper issues in the plant-based meat industry.

...

“At the category level, we’re seeing volumes for plant-based meats down 22 consecutive months now,” said John Baumgartner, a consumer food analyst at the financial institution Mizuho Americas....“We’re positive on the future for plant-based meat, but this is a 20- to 25-year story,” he said....

Some say the slowdown in sales is a product of food inflation, as consumers trade pricier plant-based meat for less-expensive animal meat. But others wonder if the companies have simply reached the maximum number of consumers willing to try or repeatedly purchase faux burgers and sausages.

...

...the Deloitte analysts said another problem might be resistance to a product that some segment of customers see as “woke” and linked to politically left-leaning ideas.

In August, when the Cracker Barrel restaurant chain stated on its Facebook page that it had begun offering the meatless “Impossible Sausage,” the post was flooded with thousands of comments from irate customers. “Go woke, go broke,” one wrote. “You just lost a ton of your base. You obviously don’t know your patrons.”

You’re very funny, but I happen to love broccoli. Leave it ALONE

Until this stuff is as cheap or cheaper than real meat, it will never have real market share. And that’s assuming it could taste reasonably close to real meat.

I still wouldn’t it though. Seems like just a bunch of processed soy and an unhealthy amount of sodium.

Nope. I have a high sensitivity to soy. Cannot consume it, nor can I consume canola oil. (Look that one up sometime)

actually, vegans won’t touch the stuff too. nothing wrong with meatless meals but the beyond meat is everything bad in a vegetarian meal....I prefer meat but if I am going to eat vegetarian give me some Indian curry and vegetables or vegetables with a peanut sauce. the stuff in beyond meat is just not a healthy alternative to old fashion beef.

I’ll bet the farm that most if not all the ingredients in ‘’plant based’’ foods come delivered in rail road tank cars. Yummmy!

Broccoli fried in bacon grease and drowned in sharp cheddar ain’t bad at all when paired with a steak.

I can’t find it now, but I read an article describing the process. It was very disturbing and about like you described.

So many responses on this thread claim this product contains soy when it in fact does not.

I tried turkey hot dogs for the first time. They had a funny color, they blistered when they cooked, and they tasted funny.

If they can't make turkey taste like beef, I wonder how they expected to turn vegetable matter and chemicals into something that tasted even close to beef.

That’s why I call myself a “vegetarian once removed”, because I eat things that eat vegetables.

I can imagine. I like a good hot dog now and then (Nathan’s) but I sure don’t want to know how they’re made!

I haven’t had beef since 89-90. Beyond meat tastes disgusting.

Just watch. Dems and feckless Republicans will somehow subsidize them. Next step will be cricket powder for everyone, and meat not allowed.

If they can come up with something that is tasty on its own, I would buy it.

They have. My wife's vegetarian and buys a brand of British-made meatless "burger" and "chicken" patties that are mushroom based. I love meat and fish and eat both often but I have to say that the fake meat my wife buys is delicious. The brand is Quorn.

I farm and ranch in Oklahoma, not big only around 50 head. It’s nice to see my cattle are kicking this imitation crap’s butt. Beef, it’s what’s for dinner.

beyond meat
lab meat
bugs

are just ahead of their time

once the “green” policies are in place restricting farming

the above crap alternatives will be the only “food” most will be able to afford

that is not their market

meat eaters is their market

the gov only knows force so they will make policies to make the fake meat the only viable alternative

either by distorted market forces ie make meat really expensive

or just straight force and make meat illegal

look at how they are pushing evs

making gas more expensive

and then ultimately just banning gas cars

they want to get rid of meat

and force is all they know
