On a late Thursday night, John Wierwille and his family saw about 11 coyotes on his property in the Laurel Ridge neighborhood around 9 p.m. He threw stones at them to scare them off, and the coyotes ran away. All seemed good.
But around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, he heard his livestock guardian dog barking, so he got dressed and went outside to see what was happening. His dogs usually don’t bark unless they feel a threat or are warning off other creatures, “but they don’t bark otherwise because a bark is for a purpose,” he said.
Wierwille had been clearing a small property by his home to have some extra space for his sheep. He is a shepherd, but like most shepherds, he doesn’t have land of his own.
“As an urban shepherd, my primary work is finding good pasture for a few hundred otherwise homeless sheep,” Wierwille said. “I do that by leasing them out to clear brush in parks and backyards and around schools and other public buildings.”
Early Friday morning, his dogs, Casper and Daisy, were protecting five sheep near Wierwille’s home. As he walked outside in the dark, he saw several coyotes. Daisy had the sheep backed up in a corner and was standing in front of them. Casper was standing in front of Daisy.
As Wierwille approached the fence, Casper took off after the coyotes to protect his herd.
In total, Casper killed eight coyotes.

I’m just here for the donkey debate.
I’ve got no room in my life for pets, however, I also have great respect for working dogs. This one is one of the best.
I’m nominating Casper to be Time’s “man of the year” . . . he’s more of a man than about 80% that are claiming to be men.
Wow! That story brought tears to my eyes. Have always heard that breed are highly protective, but one dog killing 8 coyotes, that is amazing. Now that is one noble dog.
Read the whole thing. He is hurt badly and the owner couldn’t afford treatment right away. His injuries were grim. He is now being treated, and the place he is recuperating at is taking donations.
The story includes a link to contribute.
Godspeed, Casper!
I like this quote.
Talk about making a stand and loyalty...what a dog!
Good boy!
A Porterhouse steak for the hero pooch!
I have had about a hundred encounters with my 20 plus dogs and coyotes. I’ve seen coyotes hide behind trees to attacks my dogs. I’ve seen coyotes run my dogs into other coyotes for surprise attacks. I’ve seen coyotes run my dogs on the side of the road while waiting for a car to go by so that they can cut in front of the car to kill my chasing dogs. I’ve held 4 dangerous dogs including a pit bull and bull mastiff on short leashes within 5 feet from coyotes and my dogs are going crazy to kill and the coyotes have no fear and are bating my dogs to attack.
I’ve never heard of a dog killing a coyote and none of my dogs ever had a chance of even catching the hundreds of coyotes we encountered. But I do believe this special dog killed those coyotes but I have no idea how he did it. Wow.
Great Pyrenees. I have read that they are lousy herding dogs but when it comes to protecting the flock, they make Dirty Harry look like Barney Fife.
A friend has some alpacas and they have killed coyotes. Yikes. The description was intense.

When we lived in the Utah desert, several times a lone coyote would attempt to lure one of my dogs into an ambush. Sonya was a white shephard and too smart to fall for that. She would pursue for a short distance and then fall back on me.
I have heard tales of dogs killing coyote. One involved an English Mastiff. Not the smaller Bull Mastiff, the really big 220+ pounds Mastiff. The owner found the Mastiff dead but surrounded by seven/eight dead coyote and IIRC another five or six blood trails.
I had a part Great Pyranees, about fifty percent. Wonderful dog. Hardly ever barked but when he did it meant something. Developed a very agressive cancer on his tongue and, on advice of vet, had to put him down.

An AR-15 w/ Suppressor would have been better.
There is a photo out there of a bloodied Mastif who went muzzle to muzzle with either a coyote or a wolf to protect his heard. A sheep is muzzling the doggo to show his appreciation. It’s an awesome photo.
