Air travelers will now have two more years to upgrade their licenses and other forms of identification to be Real ID-compliant.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Monday the new deadline will be May 7, 2025, allowing Americans more time following delays caused by the COVID pandemic. The old cutoff was slated for May 3, 2023.
The Real ID Act was passed in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks after several of the hijackers improperly obtained state IDs. All 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and four of five U.S. territories are covered by the REAL ID Act.
Under the law, following the enforcement deadline, federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), will not accept driver's licenses and identification cards that do not meet REAL ID standards.
Over the past decade, REAL ID enforcement has repeatedly stalled after states failed to comply with the security requirements for issuing the updated driver's licenses. But officials say this time, it's the COVID-19 pandemic that's at fault, preventing Americans from accessing state motor vehicle departments to retrieve the updated identification. According to DHS, Real ID progress over the past two years has been "significantly hindered" by backlogs at state driver's licensing agencies created by the pandemic.

But IDs for voting is racist.
your papers please......
These people couldn't run a lemonade stand.
Based upon past and present experience, RealID is a real circle jerk.
This seems really strange to me.
The horrific events of September 11th were over 20 years ago.
These real ID standards were implemented as a response to 9/11.
This is supposedly a major security upgrade that was needed because of 9/11.
And here we are over 20 years later still trying to make these supposedly important upgrades to identification.
I guess my rhetorical question is how essential are these upgraded IDs if it takes over 20 years to implement a new policy?
And the cutoff before that was Oct 10, 2021, and before that it was Oct 1, 2020.
What's the over/under on another extension?
Now I can take care of most of that business online through the web portal with just a few clicks so I hope all those miserable bastards at the DMV get laid off.
Anyway, as another poster pointed out, they make you jump through all these hoops for a driver's license so you can get on an airplane or purchase a bottle of wine at the liquor store, but you don't need it when you go to vote as that would be racist!
I was thinking the same thing.
Doncha know that poor people don’t fly? Neither do dead people, except for an occasional airline captain.
Maybe not friendly enough for illegals yet?
Who in the world could have predicted inefficiencies at DMVs?
BUT——NO ID TO VOTE ?????????
Miserable double standards-—the motto of the Dems
“WASHINGTON - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS or the Department) is announcing that after more than 15 years since Congress passed the REAL ID Act, all 50 states are now in full compliance issuing these cards, with most states becoming compliant in the last four years.”
Above is from 2019.
There were very big blue states that drug their feet. Think about the fact that the Real ID Act was passed shortly after 911.
The pandemic is over and local DMV's are operating normally - what's the "real" reason?
Our DLs were due to expire but were extended a year due to Covid. Then we were able to extend them four more years online. Now we don’t have to get a Real ID until 2025.
If there’s one thing in this world as dependable as higher taxes it’s government incompetence.
I suspect that real ID's would eliminate people from the voter rolls, Dem voters.
The real bet is what will be first, the actual requirement for Real ID or the resumption of requiring student loan payments?
Neither is a viable betting option too, with these assclowns in charge.
If it wasn’t for double standards, Democrats would have no standards...
Looks like I’ve got 2 more years to find that birth certificate…
