Russia rejects $60-a-barrel cap on its oil, warns of cutoffs

YIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian authorities rejected a price cap on the country's oil set by Ukraine’s Western supporters and threatened Saturday to stop supplying the nations that endorsed it.

Australia, Britain, Canada, Japan, the United States and the 27-nation European Union agreed Friday to cap what they would pay for Russian oil at $60-per-barrel. The limit is set to take effect Monday, along with an EU embargo on Russian oil shipped by sea.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia needed to analyze the situation before deciding on a specific response but that it would not accept the price ceiling. Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, warned that the cap's European backers would come to rue their decision.

“From this year, Europe will live without Russian oil," Ulyanov tweeted. "Moscow has already made it clear that it will not supply oil to those countries that support anti-market price caps. Wait, very soon the EU will accuse Russia of using oil as a weapon.”

All a bunch of bluster -on all sides. Russia will sell it wherever they can preferably at a higher price than the cost of production and shipping. As they should.

Legal, illegal, black market, Turkish market, wherever. It doesn’t matter. It just determines which middlemen profit.

The $60 mumbo jumbo is just EU’s plan to take the black market’s spread for themselves. An insult to Russia and free market economics. EU’s plan deserves ridicule for its insult to market economics.

Governments come and go but the Invisible Hand always wins.

sure it will if everyone besides Russia sticks to it.

Russia will get desperate for cash and take whatever they can get.

“They’ll just sell to Asia, and India or whoever will sell the global commodity they don’t use.”

They are already doing that now, and China and India are reselling it to the West at several times the price.

Or protesting their leaders in an aggressive manner.

I doubt a “peasant” in rural France gives a damn about the Donbas.

China and India are paying around $40/bbl. I think that’s the Russians giving the middle finger to the west. I believe the Ruskies are building a pipeline that will go through Iran and terminate in the Indian Ocean. Germany and Europe are toast if that’s the case.

Yes, the insurance issue is a problem for them, but they may try to self insure.

Great 14 minute vid on this issue with What’s going on with Shipping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_u90eYyW04

It won’t be as easy as it has been up till now. Oil can mostly be transported to Asia only by ships. European-owned ships will be banned from transporting Russian oil the price of which exceeds the cap and European insurance companies will be banned from insuring such transports. Almost all insurance companies that offer ship insurance are European.

Next time I go to fill up at the gas station, I’m going right to the manager and tell him I won’t pay more than $2 a gallon.

I’ll demand it, or I won’t fill up!

That’ll teach them not to gouge me anymore!

Is Russia going to eat their oil?

No, they'll sell it to Turkey and India who in turn will broker it to Europe, keeping a commission. Simple stuff, eh?

In other words, Russia is forced to sell its oil for much less money, which is good because most of Russia’s revenue comes from oil and natural gas.

Building a pipeline through Central Asia would take many years and cost a lot of money, which Russia doesn’t have. It would also be difficult if not impossible for Russia to get the needed technology, which is Western-owned.

Despite economists, oil experts, energy experts, etc., etc. telling them not to do it but they go ahead and do it.

Last laugh? Russia.

They will sell it to India, China, etc., etc., etc. who will then turn around and sell that oil/gas bought from Russia to them for profit.

Cha-ching!

Dumbass EU, as par.
Long live the continued deindustrialization of Europe.

At this point I view it as a game of economic chicken between Russia and the West to see who will back down first. Sure they can make it tougher for the Russians to export it, but in the meantime inflation is getting out of control and Europe itself is on the verge of economic collapse. Putin may be counting on a populist uprising in Europe that will end their support for the Ukraine proxy war with Russia. Personally I think this is all just a prelude to WW3 unless more sensible heads prevail.
