The terms firearms and guns are used interchangeably in this article. The article is updated from an earlier article published in 2016. The graphic adds data from 2015-2020, six more years.
The number of firearms in private hands has been rising for at least 75 years. During the last 25 years, the number of murders, murders with guns, and violent crimes with guns dropped sharply, then leveled. It has risen a fraction of the drop in the last three years.
The per capita rate of firearms ownership has increased significantly.
Fatal gun accidents are at an unprecedented low. The rate of fatal gun accidents has dropped 94% in 85 years and has leveled off.
As the concept that more guns caused more violent crime became discredited, those wishing a disarmed society changed the conversation by using the Orwellian term “gun violence”. Gun violence included suicides with all homicides and the rare fatal gun accident to create a term to promote restricting the right to keep and bear arms.Per Capita gun ownership vs. Percentage of Suicides committed with guns. Per capita gun ownership represented by the blue line, percentage of suicides commited with guns shown by orange line.
Some societies such as Japan and Korea have very high suicide rates and very low gun ownership rates.

If you want to kill yourself their are many options besides guns
Interesting. Could it be due to many states requiring safety courses before issuing an LTC or an FID? Just guessing.
True. Also … fun fact …. Most liberals citing guns death data are not aware the numbers they quote include suicides which make up about 60% of all gun deaths.
Humans are amazingly resourceful and creative creatures.
One could take the clot shot for instance. Or utter "All Lives Matter" in an urban setting.
Just ask Deep State.
It would be nice to know how per capita gun ownership is defined:
Guns in proportion to total population; total legal population; total population over a certain age (18 or 21); total population of legally eligible gun owners?
I even bothered to read the article and that didn’t explain.
That's just the way they roll...
There are likely many contributory factors, from better gun mechanics to the NRA pushing gun safety, to better medical treatment.
The chart starts in 1933. Early data is sparse. The latest year on the chart is 2017.
About two months ago my daughter-in-law of 28 years wanted my son to buy her one of those light weight “hammerless” .38s to carry in her purse, she had never owned a gun before and she wanted her dad to take her to the range with him and teach her how to shoot.
My son was going to buy it for her when I reminded him that his late mom had one that I would give to her. She was happy about it and it saved them some cash.
She did go to the range two or three times but about two weeks ago she committed suicide with it. She had spent several years living with severe back pain and finally had enough.
The number of guns per head in the United States.
Sounds like she planned for a fairly long time.
Yet gun suicides are counted among “gun deaths” in this country.
So sorry for your loss.
Includes “suicide by cop”, I presume?
“Or utter ‘All Lives Matter’ in an urban setting.”
Reminds me of a segment in “Kentucky Fried Movie,” but the character said something more inflammatory...
