...David Scott, a U of I freshman, lives in an apartment off campus. He told the Statesman he’s been looking into various self-defense options since the stabbings.
Scott said it takes him about 30 minutes to walk to campus, which he usually does early in the morning before the sun rises. After attending classes and working a part-time job at the university, he heads back home, often when it’s already dark outside. In November, the sun sets at around 4 p.m. in Moscow.
“I’ve always wanted to get a handgun,” Scott said. “But I haven’t really had a reason to get one until now. The main thing I’ve been hearing from people is to keep a firearm or something else for self-defense.”
With proper licensing, students can legally carry concealed firearms on campus, although university administrators and staff members have previously expressed disapproval.
Scott said many residents are now carrying pepper spray. Last week, the local Walmart on West Pullman Road was sold out of the chemical. The store doesn’t sell handguns but another retailer in town, Tri-State Outfitters, does.
Employees at Tri-State declined to answer questions about increased demand for self-defense weapons and said corporate instructed them not to speak with reporters. Walmart employees also forwarded inquiries to a corporate media line. Inquiries submitted to Walmart’s media line and Tri-State’s contact form were not immediately returned.

Kerry Uhlorn, an alum of the Delta Gamma sorority at U of I, started a fundraiser to provide personal safety alarms for active members of the chapter. The campaign quickly took off and raised around $20,000, which Uhlorn has used to purchase She’s Birdie key-chain alarms for every woman involved in Greek life or living in a residence hall on campus.

“Moscow community mourns four slain U of I students, loss of safety and security (Students arming themselves)”
I suspect that most Russians don’t really care about this, given the crap we’re causing in Ukraine.
Everyone should be arming themselves. The old America is gone. We’re a lawless banana republic now. Criminals are a protected species and are handled with kid gloves these days. Nobody wants to offend them or hurt their feelings. Like the sexual deviants, criminals are the new snail darters and spotted owls. The Feds are there to protect them.
Yeah, you can carry on campus, but you can’t have them in dorms. Where the hell does that leave students? Just another degenerate university in an otherwise magnificent state.
For me it was easy at 14yoa my daughter shot 6 soda cans in row.
With her S@W 4 inch model 10 double action at 25 yards.
Police-grade pepper spray should also be an option. Fox and Sabre are good brands, available at Amazon.
Sure, a firearm is better, much better. And a revolver is pretty easy to operate. On the other hand, you can walk around with pepper spray in your hand, ready to go. Shock or surprise might prevent you from drawing that revolver.
Perhaps folks should carry both.
I don’t know why the Cops haven’t asked Mark Fuhrman to help out. And he lives in Idaho.
wait... I thought promising to go easy on the criminals, defunding the police, and disarming the innocent was the answer?
Trained my daughter this year S&W 38 special, safety classes then range.
Wow, that’s really good.
No but the people of Idaho do

Better to have one and not need it than need it and not have one.
Mark Fuhrman bears some responsibility in the complete botching of the OJ Simpson murder case. For one thing, he perjured himself on the stand, and the defense team caught him at it. What a mess that was. Plus he has made racist comments in the past.
I suppose Fuhrman makes for a decent TV commentator today. But I don’t think I’d want him on my detective team.
I think he’s joking.
Thanks, I figured it out after posting.
Fuhrman has been giving interviews left and right, smh.
That guy who said he never had a reason to own a gun waiting until after something happens.
The perp(s) seemed to have attacked before the kids even gained consciousness, though. So, we also really need to remember the basics, like locking doors. I gather that saved the two survivors.
He may not have known they were there since they came home and went to bed a couple of hours earlier. If the perp followed one of the of the victims home, who all arrived home around two am, the survivors were already quietly tucked away and not observed.
It doesn’t take much to bust a locked interior door open which is why I don’t think the killer knew they were there.
