House passes measure to avert railroad strike

The House on Wednesday passed a measure that would avert a national railroad strike by forcing the adoption of a tentative labor agreement.

The vote was 290 to 137.

House members also voted 221-207 to approve a separate proposal to provide railroad workers with seven days of paid sick leave, with Democrats in favor and nearly all Republicans opposed. Both measures now go to the Senate.

A 1926 law gave Congress the power to intervene in railroad disputes that threaten to disrupt the economy. President Joe Biden on Monday called on Congress to step in–despite his usual pro-labor, pro-union stance–saying, “a rail shutdown would devastate our economy,” including putting as many as 765,000 Americans out of work within the first two weeks.

A national rail strike would idle 30% of the nation’s freight and could potentially cost $2 billion a day.

I know someone who was one of the replacement ATCs. He’s retired now.

I used to be in the IBEW, and the vast majority were Republican.
The vast majority of linemen are white men and typically more intelligent than average people.( just my experience)

Not due to unions, but I would much rather be living in 1983 than now.

Probably not a good idea to pass both actions at the same time - what’s to prevent the rail workers taking their 7 days of sick leave now?

“Dems will vote for a potato if it’s in the Dem column.”

79 Republicans joined 211 Democrats in voting for this bill. Eight Democrats and 129 Republicans voted no.

211 Democrats were not a majority. The Republican votes were needed to pass the bill.

What about Joe’s victory lap celebrating his solving the labor dispute? Walking back meets jogging back?

A lineman lacking intelligence is named "Soot".

I have a picture of a former coworkers two footprints and the change in his pocket blasted into the concrete where he stood. The rest exploded in steam and boiling fats.

And Union leadership will sell the rank and file down the road just the same.

“Doesn’t sound as difficult as when Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers.”

I’m not disagreeing with you on ATC strike in 1983, you would know more about it than me because you were an adult.(I was 12 years old)

Some differences I see:

Unemployment rate in 1983 8.3
Unemployment rate in 2022 3.9

Today is a much better labor market for unhappy rail workers to find alternative employment.

The average age of a rail worker is 45-47, here is the full break down by age.

40+ years 65%
30-40 27%
20-30 8%

The last group at only 8% tells me young males don’t want to work for rail companies.

I don’t know how this will work out, but I will be paying attention as a neutral observer.

From last month...

https://thehill.com/business-a-lobbying/business-lobbying/3644537-five-things-to-know-about-the-railroad-deal/

“...The deal also places new caps on workers’ health care costs, unions said....”

We need to see the fine print of this so-called deal.

Holy merde...

https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/113022

“...A 24 percent pay raise and $5,000 bonus. No changes in co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance costs...”

Bet every American paying four to five figures in health insurance premiums annually wishes they could get that deal...

No one in the whole Biden family has had a real job. To be fair, he doesn’t know how to relate.

Corps and Lobbyists have put hundreds of thousands in a Trust for Joe’s Grandkids.
