Stockholm (AFP) – Half the world's democratic countries are experiencing an erosion of democracy, intensified by war in Ukraine and economic crisis, an international think tank said in a report on Wednesday.
"We're seeing extraordinarily severe headwinds for democracy now, intensified by the political fallout from the economic crisis that started with the pandemic and the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine", International IDEA secretary-general Kevin Casas-Zamora told AFP.
"It might be that the credibility of elections is challenged. It might be that the rule of law is under assault. It might be that civic space is being constrained", he explained.
The number of democracies with the most severe democratic erosion -- a group dubbed "backsliding" countries which has included the United States since last year -- increased from six to seven in 2022 with the addition of El Salvador to the list.
The others are Brazil, Hungary, India, Mauritius and Poland.

However, it is not clear whether democracy can be adapted to the emerging high population, low resource context.
The system of one dominant party structure with minor opposition parties, such as in Japan, seems most likely to survive. The dominant party can make changes of policy in response to opposition initiatives without losing control of society.
You can’t have a Great Reset without breaking a few countries and cultures.
This is good news for dictators throughout the world.
Thankfully we’re a Republic.. at least that’s the way the Founding Fathers designed it and Patriots living here want to keep it.
There are no democracies.
There are oligarchies and there are republics. Those are always your two choices.
Around the world, certainly here in the US, the oligarchies are consolidating their power as part of the Great Reset.
You are correct. Aside from the issue of us being a Constitutional Republic, you cannot have a Democracy without strict controls on counting the votes.
Hey, what we need is a Benevolent One World Government and all our problems will be solved ... Bwhahahahahaha
When America sneezes, the entire planet catches cold.
One notes that the ChiCom-NIAID lockdowns of the healthy to promote the now-proven 0.0836 percent mortality rate over almost three years caused not only "political fallout" but enormous economic destruction in the long term. Tow years BEFORE the "blame everything else on Putin" game of the moment.
To suggest that "democracy" is in decline in HALF the world's nations tells far more about governments than it does about excusing the supposed nongovernmental causes of the decline.
Since 2001 and the US-led "war on terror," democracy has not arisen and been able to survive in any of the nations the West has attacked. All that has happened is the the US national debt is grown to over $32 trillion and whole nations are crumbling under "green" as well as Marxist ideologies.
Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Kosovo, Syria and so many smaller conflicts dwarf the current Ukraine-Russian war in total treasure expended. Add the additional debt raised up because of the ChiCom inspired lockdowns, and economic destruction and attacks on individual liberty have accelerated, even in our own nation.
Time to change direction. Liberty is the answer. Striving for and fighting for liberty is the pathway. Everything else is smoke and mirrors.
Democracies change with the whim of the majority. Constitutional Republics are much harder to destroy because of individual rights. Stand against these globalist elites and say NO. The US Constitution is not outdated - it’s unique and that’s why people flock here from those other DEMOCRATIC shithole places.
As more Countries try to implement “democracy”, having failed to learn from the Ancient Greeks, they end up with all the problems of the inherent creeping Socialism that comes along with it...
Gee... Who’da thunk it?
