McCarthy: If GOP Plays Games in Speaker Elections, Dems ‘Could End Up Picking Who the Speaker Is’ (then step aside!)

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said Monday on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co.” that if Republican members “play games,” the Democrats may end up picking the next House speaker.

Anchor Sean Spicer said, “We’ve had a couple of these folks that say that they won’t vote for you on the show. When we ask them what they want, they list a couple of rules, concessions that they want. And we say, well, if you get those concessions, will you vote for McCarthy, ‘Well, we’re not sure.’ Well, then, who do you want your candidate to be? ‘We don’t know that.’ You know, one can’t one of those people suggested Jim Jordan, he supporting you, Marjorie Taylor Greene is supporting you, Donald Trump-supporting you. You’ve raised, what, $500 million? Some of these people, you’ve actually funded their races. The thing that I don’t understand is I don’t envy your task. These folks aren’t giving you a target. I get your point. There’s no alternative. Everybody has voted for you. The conference has spoken. And as James Comer at the top of that clip said, you know, you’ve earned the opportunity. You were the quarterback, the coach that led them to the big game and won.”

He asked, “So the question is, going back to what Lindsay said. You’ve got five people that you’ve laid out all your cards out there. What is it that you are able to say to them that is going to change them at this point to get you 218?”

“This is where warped political delusions flare up in a big way.
If McCarthy isn’t the House Speaker, then who is? The Republican who challenged him and got all of 30 votes among his fellow Republicans?”

If McCarthy stepped aside or loses the first and second vote on the 3rd, he’ll be forced to step aside. If he becomes Speaker with Democrat votes or by convincing Democrats to vote presents to lower the vote threshold, then he won’t be Speaker for long (not that he cares. He WANTS the power).

If McCarthy steps aside, Republicans would be forced to coalesce around somebody else. When Gingrich resigned and then Livingston stepped aside and resigned, all of a sudden the House coalesced around Dennis Hastert. That’s generally how it works. The House could coalesce around Scalise, for example.

But we need to stop just going along. And at least five Republicans aren’t just going along.

Democracy is a fraud in America. We don’t get a choice. I have gotten to the point of saying “screw it”.

Their motto: “we pick your choices, now vote for it”

No longer interested. We are already miserable with this joke of DC leadership. None of these clowns are going to make anything better except for themselves. They are all so corrupt and crooked and none of them gives a shat because they all sold out..

They can GTH.

The GOP is not going to “coalesce” around a Freedom Caucus member, so what makes you think the second or third choice would be any better than McCarthy?

And the Gingrich-Livingston-Hastert example you cite is a terrible one. You’ve explained how this country ended up with a child molester as House Speaker.

Spicer is just another Republican elite who lately has been defending the establishment on his nightly shows.

To have a democrat as Speaker, it would require Republicans to vote for him. Maybe we should be worried.

I'm at the point where I believe this mess is no longer salvageable. Buckle up and let them collapse this corrupt, degenerate system. If McCarthy & McConnell are their ideas of Leaders, there is nothing we can do but watch.

Agree. This isn’t the right fight. 7% Mitch just got put back as Minority leader by a very wide margin. Primary everyone who supports the leadership. This means you may lose an election or Two. It might mean no red wave but you need to get rid of all of the lifers. Trump has the right approach here. Primary these pukes

They need to put their demands in writing. I agree with what they are asking for, the distribution of power back to the members, legislation should be individual issues, legislation should go through committees. Just spell it out, if McCarthy won’t agree, don’t vote for him but put it in writing.

I’m old enough to remember the contest for the speakership in 2011. Out of Roy Blunt, John Shadegg and John Boehner the Rs selected the least effective Speaker (Boehner), particulary in the age of 0bamacare (should have been Shadegg).

There aren’t called the stupid party for nothing.

After f*cking up the midterm, you’d think this guy would just step aside. It’s proof that he actually met the objective of ensuring no landslide.

I agree on both points. But we can’t just keep going along. Personally, I’d like to see who rises up. And I’d like to see McCarthy’s defeat, since he’s been a terrible leader and will be a terrible Speaker like Ryan and Boehner were. They’ve clearly groomed Cantor, Ryan and McCarthy to be Speaker. I’d be happy with Scalise (though he’s nothing to write home about).

Yes, i knew that. Trump’s name has been bandied about for the last couple of years for this role.

Realistically, who are the alternatives in the House to McCarthy?

The Freedpm Caucus may want someone besides McCarthy but they have to recognize that who THEY want instead may get even more opposition in the GOP than their opposition to McCarthy. If they were to get McCarthy to step aside and they put up their candidate and that candidate looses to the Dim, then what will they do???
