Immense challenges face law enforcement authorities amid continued demand for rhino horns, says WWF-Singapore’s Uma Sachidhanandam.
It was sobering when I first heard of Singapore’s largest seizure of rhino horns last month - weighing in at about 34kg with an estimated price tag of S$1.2 million.
The rhino horns were found in the transit baggage of a passenger travelling from South Africa to the Lao People's Democratic Republic through Singapore.
It was also a reminder of another case two years earlier, where a South African man was sentenced to 17 months’ jail for trying to smuggle about 22kg of white rhino horns worth an estimated US$563,000 through Singapore to Vietnam.

17 months in jail...Two years later, same SA perp?
Same kind of sentence for voter fraud, yet let out before the next election?
I prefer how Africa deals with poachers.
Yup...on our long drive from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park a few years ago I got to talk at length with our excellent guide. When the subject turned to poachers he told me that the Kenyan Government's policy was "shoot to kill".
I bet it cuts down on poaching.
No way it works! Just look at American RINOs for proof! None of them are stiff and as hard ready to give their all What they are is weak and flaccid with no stamina completely unable to perform satisfactorily
They ought to institute the death penalty for smuggling rhino horns and elephant tusks.
