A controversial bill prohibiting Big Apple landlords from performing criminal background checks on prospective tenants – even those convicted of murder and other heinous crimes – is on a fast track to becoming law.
At least 30 of the City Council’s 51 members have agreed to back the “Fair Chance for Housing Act,” which is set to go before the Council’s Committee on Civil Rights for its first public hearing on Dec. 8, records show.
Unlike an earlier version of the bill that died in another Council committee at the end of the last year following outcry from landlord advocacy groups and others, the new bill introduced in August by Councilman Keith Powers (D-Manhattan) is gaining steam because of support from newly elected pols. Its co-sponsors include Speaker Adrienne Adams.
And Mayor Eric Adams appears more than willing to sign it into law should the bill reach his desk.

So NY residents decided to go more woke despite the subway beatings, organized thefts, etc.
Good for them!
Get out now! Before nyc goes full thunderdome. Everything they are doing is to create total anarchy so they can clamp down the entire city. They prosecute and persecute the law aviding and let the criminals fo free to cause mayhem.
Get the hell out now.
The race to the bottom continues. Good luck to the tenants that have to live next to these freaks...
Speaking of background checks, I saw this on a poster:
“I was considering reselling my guns to the government, but after a quick background check I discovered they have a history of violence and instability.”
[They prosecute and persecute the law aviding and let the criminals go free to cause mayhem.]
It’s the Democrat Progressive way.
And half of the American people can’t figure out what keeps going wrong.
They are baffled.
same sh!t, different day in the garbage dump known as NYC
SELL!
“ A controversial bill prohibiting Big Apple landlords from performing criminal background checks on prospective tenants – even those convicted of murder and other heinous crimes – is on a fast track to becoming law.”
Wickedness.
Invading enemies from a hostile government do these things.
Does that include people convicted for Vice Crimes, as they used to call them? Very dangerous, needlessly so.
Something new I discovered this year (despite 50 years of observing politics) is the “Curley Effect.”
Named after an American politician, the meaning is: a politician with a small majority tears down the community — massive immigration, lawlessness — to drive out the class/demographic of his political opponent.
So, Detroit gets more Detroit.
New York runs out taxpayers, workers, upper and middle class, whites, and conservatives.
That gives them a stronger grip on power.
With just one major city they can then control the entire state.
Because when you already suffer from a housing shortage the best thing to do is make new laws guaranteed to reduce inventory.
I would not rent wo doing a criminal bg check for sure!
Except NYC isn’t a “small majority” democrat. It’s overwhelming.
Its because the socialist pols and media shift the blame for what they do, onto their enemies, in true socialist fashion.
For equity, NYC officials should be prohibited from performing criminal background checks on CCW applicants.
I don’t really see how this is possible.
If I was thinking of renting to Someone how could they stop me from doing a public records check?
Or a twitter check ? maybe I could even check voter reg and see if they were
And the sheep are too stupid to figure it out :(
NYC is already a landlord nightmare.
We have a client who is an 80-year old widow who has owned a small 4 unit building since forever. She took new tenants in 2017, disabled individuals on partial housing assistance; the city paid some and the tenant was responsible for the difference. They paid the difference exactly once, their first month, and never again. So in 2018 she sought to evict them. In January 2019 they agreed that she would accept city assistance only for 12 months with no additional rent from them, and they would voluntarily vacate in Jan. 2020. Well of course they didn’t. Then covid occurred and they couldn’t be evicted. Then as the moratorium was ending, the tenants filed an administrative complaint against HER for violating THEIR civil rights. Allegedly there were problems with the building’s heat, not responding to an e-mail about their service dog, and other little ticky-tack meaninglessness. Meanwhile she is forbidden from taking any action which could be considered “retaliatory” (read: seeking to evict them again). So once the city found probable cause because of course they did, now the city is suing HER on the tenants’ behalf.
Why anyone would be a landlord in NYC is beyond my comprehension.
Well its all they hear from media, schools, some their folks, and socialist groups. Echo chambers and chanted slogans and useful Goldsteins to blzme it all on. Sometimes its hard to blame the young ones.
If they’d get their heads out of Fake Book, Tik Tok, their cell phones and rap, they might learn a thing or two. A significant number of them do that, I mean.
