The Twitter office responsible for complying with European misinformation laws has been shut down after Elon Musk's layoffs

Twitter has closed down its office in Brussels, Belgium, according to the Financial Times.

The office was a small one, with under 10 staff, but was vital because of its relationship with the European Union, which last week introduced new laws for social media companies.

Twitter's two digital policy chiefs in Europe — Julia Mozer and Dario La Nasa — left the company last week, five people familiar with the situation told the FT.

It was unclear if they resigned or were laid-off, but they left the company after Musk issued an ultimatum to all staff, telling them to work "long hours at a high intensity" or leave with three months of severance pay.

Soon after Musk's takeover, the EU's internal market commissioner, Thierry Breton tweeted at him: "In Europe, the bird will fly by our rules."

Six days before the FT's report, Breton told Franceinfo that Musk "will have to open his algorithms. We will have control, we will have access, people will no longer be able to say rubbish."

But now the Brussels office has closed its doors, Twitter's relationship with the EU will be tested.

Without a doubt. This is why Briton’s with common sense pushed so hard for Brexit. Every other European Nation should do the same and tell those perfume prince’s in Brussels to F off.

Thierry Breton is fine with Twitter publishing rubbish he approves of.

The question is: Who decides what is rubbish, and what is not.

The most telling thing is how the EU was fine with Twitter hiding their methods and algorythms when they were Leftists banning Conservatives. The EU was just fine with Twitter then. Only when Twitter is on the cusp of true freedom of speech, does the EU want control over it.

This is who Leftists are. Dictators. Tyrants. Bullies. Oppressors.

Why is Biden supporting EU Twitter censors in their war against Putin?

It’s probably more cost effective to just block access to Twitter from Europe than it is to try to comply with their silly laws.

Cheaper yet to just do nothing - let the Euros worry about it themselves.

Well, if Twitter stays up in Europe but does not try to comply with their kooky internet laws then Twitter is open to all sorts of legal ramifications in the European courts. So it’s actually cheaper to just shut down access to the Europeans. That circumvents their ability to pressure him with legal action, fines, etc.

True, but if he shutdowns down all of the International Offices, he will not have a Nexus for them to attack. Twitter is likely a new company headquartered in Delaware. He is going to need some high-priced legal talent to fight in court that Twitter is a US based company and that it does not have to abide by the EU regulations.

Humpty Dumpty: “When I use a word it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.”

Alice: “The question is whether you can make words mean so many different things.”

Humpty Dumpty: “The question is, which is to be master—that’s all.”

I’m not sure why countries allow other countries social networking services to operate inside their territories.

It seems like there should be different social networks reflecting the standards and circumstances of each nation, or at least each region.

Formerly, there used to be different broadcasting standards for American versus European television. DVDs also come with region codes and regional players.

We need more firewalls.

I’d like a tarrif of about 10 cents per megabyte on data flows into the US so it wouldn’t be economical for someone to call me 5 times / day from India.

Right. Not sure how we can ally with Europe much longer when they don’t allow free speech.

Maybe they should pay for their own defense budget, so we don’t need to station troops their anymore?

The EU can build a new Iron Curtain of Information like the Great Firewall of China to protect people from knowing too much.

Then the people can use a government-partnership platform like Old Twitter to parrot things Dear Leader wants them to say.
