(Reuters) - There is now an imminent threat of measles spreading in various regions globally, as COVID-19 led to a steady decline in vaccination coverage and weakened surveillance of the disease, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. public health agency said on Wednesday.
Measles is one of the most contagious human viruses and is almost entirely preventable through vaccination. However, it requires 95% vaccine coverage to prevent outbreaks among populations.
A record high of nearly 40 million children missed a measles vaccine dose in 2021 due to hurdles created by the COVID pandemic, the WHO and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a joint report.
While measles cases have not yet gone up dramatically compared to previous years, now is the time to act, the WHO's measles lead, Patrick O'Connor, told Reuters.
"We are at a crossroads," he said on Tuesday. "It is going to be a very challenging 12-24 months trying to mitigate this."
A combination of factors like lingering social distancing measures and cyclical nature of measles may explain why there has not yet been an explosion of cases despite the widening immunity gaps, but that could change quickly, said O'Connor, pointing out the highly contagious nature of the disease.

These donkeyholes never let up, do they?
I’m lucky to have a doctor who actually thinks and examines the evidence, and respects a patient’s choice when it comes to treatment.
It took a long time to find a doctor like that, and some of the doctors I went through before shouldn’t have been trusted with anything more complicated than a bake sale!
I've come to despise every Fedgov department/bureaucracy. I keep looking for just one that is truthful and not fear-mongering to control the populace.
Not all vectors are zoonotic. :-)
Not these days, anyway.
There you go again. You keep misusing words you think make you sound smart, but actually do the opposite. You also seem to have a compulsion to post about Covid vaccines on threads that have nothing to do with those vaccines. It just gets tiresome and irksome.
I seem to recall that Measles are not a huge issue if contracted as a child.
In an adult, however, it is very bad news. Could be wrong on that.
My first inklings (among other things) that the national government was completely out to lunch, was about 30 years ago, when it became apparent they had no concern whatsoever about hordes of unvaccinated, unvetted people from who knows where pouring across the border en masse and being deposited in school districts across the nation. A complete dereliction of their duty right there.
Or....the stinking shot has burned out people’s immune systems making them susceptible to all sorts of things they used to be immune to.
If you got measles as kid with a healthy immune system usually you’ll do fine, although you’ll probably average being sicker than with the other ‘routine childhood viruses.’ But if you get it first when you’re older, sicker or when your immune system is otherwise not full strength it does kill some and certainly can knock healthy folks for a loop. Of the ‘old world’ diseases imported to the ‘new world’ it probably killed the next month after smallpox (itself once the worst of the ‘routine childhood viruses.’)
WHO and CDC have negative credibility.
“It is going to be a very challenging 12-24 months trying to mitigate this.”
It would probably be a lot less challenging if the whole medical industry hadn’t just destroyed their credibility with much of the public.
Whatever it takes to justify “mail-in” and “vote harvesting”.......
their intent from the outset.
now all the children injected with the jab... will be threatened by death and deformation due to their infection with Measles... a real vaccine by definition and rigorous testing..
If measles are a threat it is caused by two reasons: Open borders and immune systems destroyed by the faux COVID vaccines.
Who is the WHO & CDC?
Those folks destroyed themselves in 2020 & 2021.
Smallpox was never considered ‘routine childhood disease’.
It was not that contagious and most people got it at adult age (e.g. Pres. Washington).
On the other hand, since measles are the most contagious disease around, basically everybody got is before the vaccine was developed. We are all (older folks) measles survivors or descendent of measles survivors!
I believe that not getting measles in childhood was kind of scary, because the older people had more problems with the virus.
The worst affected were the Native Americans and Hawaiians who were not exposed to it before the contact with Europeans. Measles indeed wreak havoc in these communities!
