Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly is announcing new sanctions on Belarus Tuesday in response to its support for Russia’s war on Ukraine.
Joly says in a statement that Belarusian leadership is enabling human-rights violations and allowing the country to serve as a launching pad for Russia’s attacks.
Canada is adding 22 Belarusian officials to the sanctions list, including people who are involved in the stationing and transport of Russian military personnel and equipment.
The sanctions also affect 16 Belarusian companies across the military manufacturing, tech, engineering, banking and rail sectors.
The announcement comes as the country’s exiled opposition leader, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, visits Ottawa for meetings with Joly, members of Parliament and senators.
Joly says the two intend to discuss the complicity of President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime in the war and the importance of upholding democracy in Belarus.
Lukashenko came to power in 2020 elections widely considered to be fraudulent.

Correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn’t the above sentence have been betterwritten saying “Lukashenko remained in power in 2020...”
Also a suggestion that CSTO countries should be sanctioned might be a bad idea. Aren’t some of those countries trying to move away from the Russian sphere of influence? Regarding China, wouldn’t it be better to wait on Chinese sanctions until they do something significantly overt?
I am glad to see Canada is supporting the move for free and fairly counted elections in Belarus.
On further thought Comrade, sanctioning CSTO countries is a REALLY BAD IDEA. They are now being courted by Turkey to form a Turkic State organization which will discomfit Russia, Iran, and China. This works in America’s interest. Never make unnecessary enemies, especially when they may work against your enemies and potential enemies.
If you hadn’t made this stupid suggestion, I would not even hav discovered this new Turkish move, so I hope your Russian backers are happy with you, as I pass on this interesting info.
