DENVER (AP) — A Colorado state panel recommended Thursday that Mount Evans, a prominent peak near Denver, be renamed Mount Blue Sky at the request of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes.
The Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board voted unanimously for the change. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis will weigh in on the recommendation before a final decision by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.
Thursday’s vote comes as part of national efforts to address a history of colonialism and oppression against Native Americans and other people of color after protests in 2020 called for racial justice reform.
The proposed name change recognizes the Arapaho were known as the Blue Sky People, while the Cheyenne hold an annual renewal-of-life ceremony called Blue Sky.
The 14,264-foot (4,348-meter) peak southwest of Denver is named after John Evans, Colorado’s second territorial governor. Evans resigned after an 1864 U.S. cavalry massacre of more than 200 Arapaho and Cheyenne people — most of them women, children and the elderly — at Sand Creek in what is now southeastern Colorado.

Let’s rename the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives to “The Dens of Thieves.”
We should start a petition.
Just another way to try to illustrate that America’s founding was evil.
When do we get to change monuments named after indians from tribes who attacked settlers? But there is no push back from the adults.
Mount Evans is the highest paved road in North America. You can walk to just a couple hundred feet shy of Mt. Whitney.

“Parliament of Whores” would work, too.

“...a history of colonialism and oppression against Native Americans and other people of color...”
Boo-freaking-hoo, morons.
A favorite communist tactic.
I kind of like Mount Blue Sky. Has more pazazz than Mt. Evans—
Ok - I’m done with this insipid colonialism talk.
The only ‘colonialism’ happening now is by the illegal immigrant communists.
Outside of Yellowstone Natl. Park….there’s Chief Joseph Scenic Highway…..which leads to Dead Indian Pass…….( btw ‘scenic’ means gut wrenching, I want to throw up….HIGH with SWITCHBACKS all the way up…..and down…it’s a lot of mountain with all kinds of Dead Indian this and that.
Just saying!
I’ve been up and down Dead Indian Pass…..( never again)
No one seems to mind that it’s called Dead Indian because it’s ‘historic’
I guess Mount Evans isn’t~
Parliament of Whores

Well, okay. But to be fair, someone should look into just how those tribes acquired the area in the first place. Did they move into vacant land, or did they massacre the tribes that were there previously?
Name it mount Hungate, after the family the Indians murdered that caused the settlers around Denver to decide they had to deal with the constant murders and raids. Murdered a man and his wife who were quiet farmers, and his two little kids
Potato...potahto.
Nathan rode out with a hired hand, Mr. Miller, looking for stray heads of cattle. Several miles from the ranch, they saw smoke coming from the area of Hungate’s cabin and suspected an attack by American Indians. Miller said that he was riding for Denver and advised Hungate that his family was likely dead and if he went back to the cabin he would be killed, too. Hungate rode back to find that his cabin was on fire and his family had been killed and badly mutilated. He was captured and was similarly killed. The couple was in their twenties, Laura was 2 1/2 years of age, and Florence was a 6-month-old infant.
Miller made it to Denver and gave news of the attack to Van Wormer, who rode to the ranch to find the Hungate family dead. Nathan Hungate’s body was badly mutilated with 80 bullets, and was found a distance from the house. The bodies of Ellen and the two girls were found mutilated, bound together, and thrown into a shallow well. All of the family’s stock had been taken and the buildings were burned down.
Massacres like this happened constant in the months leading up to sand creek.
But the narrative lives on. One day for reasons nobody ever really understands, the settlers raised a militia and went out and attacked Indians, and killed innocent people. That’s the story people like.
Could have went with Scalped Pilgrim Peak.
