Republicans Pass First Round of Rule Changes After Flipping House

The conference addressed 12 of 24 proposed rule changes put forward by GOP members (pdf).

Republicans, who will take control of the House in January 2023, are leaving more controversial rule changes for consideration after Thanksgiving.

Several of the rules proposed serve to weaken the power of the speaker as many Republicans remain lukewarm about the prospect of a Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

One of the new rules passed by the conference would make it easier to remove a sitting speaker.

Specifically, the rule allows a majority of the GOP caucus to vote to remove the speaker. Currently, the speaker’s seat can only be vacated following a motion from the House majority leader.

Under the new rule, put forward by Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio), any member can put forward a motion to depose the speaker. A majority of the conference must then agree to the motion before it can go to a vote.

The Turner amendment states that: “It is the position of the Republican Conference that the privilege under House Rule IX Clause 2(a)(3) should only be available with the agreement of the Republican Conference so as to not allow Democrats to choose the Speaker.”

The effects of this rule are two-fold.

First, the rule heads off the threat of Democrats being able to place their own pick in the speaker’s chair.

Though Republicans are in the majority, and have put forward their own nominee for speaker—current House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)—Democrats also will put forward a candidate for speaker.

Some Republicans have expressed concerns that if Democrats put forward someone like Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Democrats may be able to win enough cross-aisle support to deprive Republicans of their pick for the top House spot.

Nancy had the rules very much on her side and in her interest. No getting rid of her until she wanted to go.

I think the House Republicans are demonstrating beyond any shadow of a doubt by electing California McCarthy speaker that their (the new Republican House Members) collective hearts are, being kind, about 1-3 points to the left of center which begs the question of whether or not conservatives should continue to support the Republican Party at all.

Many Democrats don’t even argue that their party is Socialist any more. Give them credit for that (i.e. a grain of truth!). The Republicans should be forced to choose. Namely, are you a conservative or are you 1-3 points to the Left of center. If you are, own up to it and quit lying! Then go form your own party like the Socialist Democrat Party has.

On its face you are correct, but when you read about the details of the situation you can see why even MTG was calling on Republicans to support McCarthy.

If the party doesn't get behind one candidate, then even 2-3 Republican House members could vote with the Democrats to put some nitwit like Liz Cheney in there.

The Stupid Party can’t put enough votes together to hold the majority. On every vote there will be RINOS that will vote with the RATS. It will be sickening to watch the circular firing squad, vote after vote.

The reflexively anti-Republican Surrender Monkey’s found this objectionable. By doing so they have once again beclowned themselves. The next few years will be lots of fun watching the Surrender Monkeys tie themselves in a knot.

Once upon a time I developed a 15 story office building in downtown Moscow (Austin). My son said “Dad, even 67% occupied (preleased with National Credit tenant), something could go wrong”.

I replied.....”son, don’t ever be afraid to fail”.

The Republicans, aka RINO’s (nearly all of them) have lost so much credibility that the masses, of which I’m one, have lost complete confidence in all of them but one (Trump). To regain credibility and save America from certain doom, they are going to have to step up and raise some hell and take some risks!

By the way, I will be driving through Alberta at the end of May next year. I’ll enter at Sweetgrass and end up in Dawson City. Will be on the Yukon all summer.
