Ukraine war: 10 million without power after Russian strikes
BBC ^ | 11-17-22 | Catherine Byaruhanga in Kyiv & James FitzGerald

President Volodymyr Zelensky has said 10 million Ukrainians are without power after a fresh wave of missile strikes by Russia.

At least seven people were killed in the strikes, with the number expected to rise.

"We are doing everything to normalize the supply," Mr Zelensky said in his nightly address.

Ukraine's air defence managed to shoot down six cruise missiles and five drones, he added.

On Thursday, Russia pounded Ukraine with a fresh missile barrage, hitting more energy installations and other civilian buildings less than two days after one of its heaviest bombardments yet.

Seven people died when a missile hit their apartment block in Vilnyansk, near the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, the Ukrainian presidency said.

A gas production plant in the east and a missile factory in Dnipro were among the latest targets, officials say.

Those suffering power outages are mainly in the capital, Kyiv, the western city of Vinnytsia, the port city of Odesa in the south-west and Sumy in the north-east.

Odessa is a Russian city, created/established by Russians, and still too many Russians living there to allow it top be ruled by Kiev. Russians can govern other people and allow them to live decently; hohos can’t.

Ref your #97:

Yes, it’s Putin’s war. It’s also very much Nuland’s war, Sullivan’s war, etc. Biden hasn’t a clue.

Ref your #95:

This is a more worthwhile post. I can understand how the refugee ladies would see it that way. At least one highly respected Chinese scholar sees it that way, too (keep in mind this was written in early March at the very beginning — and a machine translation):

The progress and intentions of the Russian army in Ukraine are all speculations. Now it seems that the most likely situation is: the Russian army intends to occupy the Dnieper River, surround and annihilate the Ukrainian army on the east bank, and create a de facto demilitarization of Ukraine. After the task is completed, the troops may be withdrawn as quickly as the Sino-Vietnamese self-defense counterattack, and the mess will be left to Ukraine. As Ukraine moves closer to NATO again, as Israel did with Gaza and southern Lebanon, it once again wiped out a de facto disarmed Ukraine. This is certainly not ideal, but there is no other way but to sit back and watch Ukraine join NATO. The United States wants to cut sausages, and Russia directly smashes the stove.”

Link to essay by Chen Feng (you’ll have to run it through Google translate). Long, but well worth the read — and keep in mind it was written back in March):

https://m.guancha.cn/ChenFeng3/2022_03_02_628308

Although written at the very beginning of the conflict, he got a lot right. I don’t agree with everything he wrote, but it’s interesting to see his take on it. Sadly, he might be correct on that particular point.

Whoever “wins” this war in Ukraine, China is the real winner. I’ve been saying that since the beginning.

As for wanting to continue the fight, well of course they want to. In every war, the folks who get invaded want to fight to defend their homes and families, no matter how they felt before. Southerners against secession who refused to fight for the Confederacy soon changed their minds, took up arms and fought to the bitter end once the Yankees attacked. I’ve been in the middle of Other People’s civil wars where most of the people never wanted the war at all, but suddenly found that war wanted them — and they, too, wanted to keep fighting. It’s basic human nature. These same ladies may have wanted Minsk before Putin invaded.

Had Minsk been implemented, I seriously doubt this war would be. Putin would not have not been able to justify it to his people. Ukraine would be whole (except for Crimea) and the Donbas would have a certain degree of cultural autonomy, sort of the Quebec of Ukraine. It’s so very sad Vickie Nuland & friends did not want Minsk.

Ukraine helped Hillary; punked Trump
Politico.com
By KENNETH P. VOGEL and DAVID STERN
01/11/2017

<>Ukrainian efforts to sabotage Trump backfire; foreign aid billions threatened
<>Kiev scrambles to make amends with president-elect Trump after working to boost Clinton.
<>President Petro Poroshenko’s administration, and the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, insists that Ukraine stayed neutral in the presidential race.

Donald Trump wasn’t the only presidential candidate whose campaign was boosted by officials of a former Soviet bloc country.

A Politico investigation found
<><>Ukrainian govt officials helped Hillary and trashed Trump, questioning his fitness for office.
<><>They disseminated documents implicating a top Trump aide in corruption
<><>They suggested they were investigating the matter, only to back away after the election.
<><>They helped Clinton’s allies research damaging information on Trump and his advisers.

A Ukrainian-American operative who was consulting for the Democratic National Committee met with top officials in the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington in an effort to expose ties between Trump, top campaign aide Paul Manafort and Russia, according to people with direct knowledge of the situation.

The Ukrainian efforts had an impact in the race, helping to force Manafort’s resignation and advancing the narrative that Trump’s campaign was deeply connected to Ukraine’s foe to the east, Russia. But they were far less concerted or centrally directed than Russia’s alleged hacking and dissemination of Democratic emails.

Russia’s effort was personally directed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, involved the country’s military and foreign intelligence services, according to U.S. intelligence officials. They reportedly briefed Trump last week on the possibility that Russian operatives might have compromising information on the president-elect. And at a Senate hearing last week on the hacking, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said “I don’t think we’ve ever encountered a more aggressive or direct campaign to interfere in our election process than we’ve seen in this case.”

There’s little evidence of such a top-down effort by Ukraine. Longtime observers suggest that the rampant corruption, factionalism and economic struggles plaguing the country — not to mention its ongoing strife with Russia — would render it unable to pull off an ambitious covert interference campaign in another country’s election.

And President Petro Poroshenko’s administration, along with the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, insists that Ukraine stayed neutral in the race.

Ukraine Worked With Democrats Against
Trump in 2016 to Stop Putin. The Bet Backfired Badly.
Real Clear Investigations ^
Posted on 3/10/2022, 8:11:28 AM by FarCenter
Six years ago, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of their country, the Ukrainians bet that a Hillary Clinton presidency would offer better protection from Russian President Vladimir Putin, even though he had invaded Crimea during the Obama-Biden administration, whose Russian policies Clinton vowed to continue.

Working with both the Obama administration and the Clinton campaign, Ukrainian government officials intervened in the 2016 race to help Clinton and hurt Trump in a sweeping and systematic foreign influence operation that’s been largely ignored by the press. The improper, if not illegal, operation was run chiefly out of the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, where officials worked hand-in-glove with a Ukrainian-American activist and Clinton campaign operative to attack the Trump campaign. The Obama White House was also deeply involved in an effort to groom their own favored leader in Ukraine and then work with his government to dig up dirt on – and even investigate — their political rival.

Ukrainian and Democratic operatives also huddled with American journalists to spread damaging information on Trump and his advisers – including allegations of illicit Russian-tied payments that, though later proved false, forced the resignation of his campaign manager Paul Manafort. The embassy actually weighed a plan to get Congress to investigate Manafort and Trump and stage hearings in the run-up to the election.

As it worked behind the scenes to undermine Trump, Ukraine also tried to kneecap him publicly. Ukraine’s ambassador took the extraordinary step of attacking Trump in an Op-Ed article published in The Hill, an influential U.S. Capitol newspaper, while other top Ukrainian officials slammed the GOP candidate on social media.

Of course they did. It was thanks to Hillary’s good buddy Vickie Nuland they got into power. And got all the filthy lucre that goes with it. No brainer.

I would have voted for a three-legged possum if that’s what was running against Hillary in 2016. She was positively slavering for this hideous war we see now.

After Zelensky was elected, Trump advised him to implement Minsk. But ... soon afterward Biden was “elected” and peace went out the window.

The graph in post 82 proves that Odessa is not a “city that should be part of Russia for reasons of demographics”.

Just as Edison new Jersey should not be part of India.

Things are not that simple that we can say “the majority speak English hence they should be part of the UK “, leave alone the amorphous ethnic Russian vs ethnic Ukrainian.

Putin has invigorated the Ukrainian sense of nationhood

You are half way to a full understanding. You’ve got the dates, now research the truth.

Col MacGreagor is the finest mind and intellect our Pentagon has had in the past 40 years; he is just opposite the socialism Democrat run institutions of American Diplomacy.

By that reckoning Vyborg should be returned by Russia to Finland, Koningsburg / Kaliningrad should be returned to Germany, Vladivostok to China etc.

Odessa was founded in the Tsardom of Russia. That state ended in 1917. The USSR explicitly said it was not a successor state of the Tsardom, and modern day Russia says it is a successor state to the Russian Soviet federation and not to the Tsardom.

Odessa is a Ukrainian city de facto and de jure since 1922.

The majority of people living there do not want to be part of Putin’s Russia.

I figured you’d see it that way. Confirmation bias is real. We all have it to one degree or another. That graph shows many things, tragic horrible things. Look again.

And I’m not saying Odessa should be part of Russia, either, so don’t go there.

Of course the Chinese guy wrote “withdrawn as quickly as the Sino-Vietnamese self-defense counterattack”
When in reality the PRC got its butt handed to it by the Vietnamese and had to withdraw.

Strangely enough that is similar to what is happening in Ukraine

I will respond in more detail regarding minsk tomo7

He was speaking merely of the swiftness of withdrawal re the Sino-Vietnamese border skirmish. His point is Israel v. Gaza/southern Lebanon dynamic.

Not that it has particular bearing on Ukraine, back to the Sino-Vietnamese thing. The Chinese take the long view and it appears they got Cambodia in the end, and so may consider themselves to have won. Have you checked out Cambodia lately? It’s overrun and owned by the Chinese. It’s horrible. I admit I have cried tears over it.

Again, whoever “wins” this ghastly war in Ukraine, the Chinese will be the real winners.

This war is Putin’s war.
——-
Okay, right. Brain dead Biden pushed sanctions which is now crippling the EU and West….the West is going bankrupt while Vlad is making billions.

Watch for the the massive energy talks/agreements ,Russia selling their energy to China and India, hundreds of billions….but the brain dead EU has already bought LNG from China- guess what? It was Russian LNG, sold to China- then marked up hugely when SOLD back to the EU.

Wake me up when all the brain dead Western leaders figure out ( like the war cheerleaders) they have been lied to and deceived, again.

…..and Vlad says CHECKMATE again, and again. Carry on war cheerleaders, your road to destruction is approaching quickly.

Meanwhile, the Welfare nation of Ukraine is entering a very dark “ Stone Age”- economy, manufacturing, currency, exports , infrastructure all destroyed . I assume you believe somehow that is “ winning”?

The best part- the West can not do anything about it. They are now approaching 65 percent darkness….

Get off the Western Media whiskey bottle.

Correct, unfortunately not enough knowledge put out there about what happens to a modern society when electricity is cut, or what happens to a modern military that has no electricity. Generators stop running because fuel can not be pumped out of storage tanks, starvation occurs because of no delivery, all transportation stops, all water stops because of frozen pipes, the list is long.

The suffering right now with just rolling blackouts and 45-55 percent cut is simply not going to be reported by the Biden war cheerleaders. Hit 80 percent loss…..repeat- Stone Age. Good bye Ukraine, your corrupted leadership sold you out.

….and Vlad says Checkmate everyday Mother Nature drops the temperature.

” ALL the equipment needed to replace the destroyed grid is MADE IN Russia.”

That isn’t true.

Ukraine started a test on February 19, 2022 by unplugging from the Russian electric grid to start a synchronization process with the EU electric grid and did a “year’s work in two weeks” by completely unplugging from Russia and plugging into EU. Of course Russia invaded on February 24, 2022 and cut off the Ukrainian grid two weeks later but Ukraine was already unplugged and doing quite nicely on the EU electric grid. It’s almost unfair how Ukraine is always one step ahead of Russia.

Since 2014 they have switched over - not completely but largely - away from Soviet grid.

And the manufacturing base of the USSR was primarily in Ukraine and south-western Russia, so ukraine is capable of building or repairing the old Soviet stuff.

Good information, however it will be quite some time to manufacture the 330, 770 transformers, ( for many reasons), especially when Vlad takes them out at will.

The Duran had an interesting discussion on exactly how Vlad is approaching the Ukie grid destruction. Cheap drones target a particular power station, Ukie AA fire off, the AA positions revealed, then taken out. Then the station is hit by the larger accurate missiles,…the station is observed on repair techniques, studied, then when close to repair completion he will hit it again, rinse repeat.

The taking out of the Ukie grid is methodically being taken out in a very calculated manner. The energy experts have stated , for now, it seems Vlad is showing restraint and “ warning” the Ukies of his capabilities to totally shut them down…..the “ final” death blow to be applied during his next offensive?

We shall see, but the amount of Ukies fleeing into Poland is greatly increasing, and Polands ability to food, house etc is getting very strained.

Vlad will and can create another refuge crisis for the EU, and there is nothing the West can do…..checkmate, again.
