President Vladimir Putin urged the Russian government on Wednesday to control car prices, as one industry head said Western sanctions could send annual sales crashing to below 1 million for the first time since records began.
Auto sales have fallen over 60% so far this year, and may end up being less than a quarter of what they were a decade ago, according to Maxim Sokolov, head of Russia's top carmaker Avtovaz.
Some of this year's drop is due to the pullout of foreign carmakers such as Renault (RENA.PA) and Mercedes-Benz and a collapse in demand due to a mass mobilisation for the Ukraine conflict.
But much is also due to falling living standards and higher prices, as well as the difficulty of securing foreign-made components after the imposition of a barrage of sanctions by Western countries in response to Russia's military campaign in Ukraine; the latest Lada model has had to be produced without airbags or anti-lock brakes.
Speaking with top officials, Putin acknowledged that the situation was "not easy", and asked the government to look at making cars more affordable, suggesting that prices were being raised unfairly.
"I would like to draw your attention to the need for constant control over pricing, so that under these difficulties, of which we are all aware, including logistics, no one abuses or unreasonably raises the prices of road vehicles," he said.

U.S. auto sales to rise in October as supply chains improve
Oct 26 (Reuters) - U.S. auto retail sales are expected to rise in October as supply chain snags ease, making more vehicles available at dealerships amid higher demand, an industry report from consultants J.D. Power and LMC Automotive showed on Wednesday.
An improvement in new vehicle inventories bumped up the sales activity in the United States at a time when consumers are ready to spend more to own a personal vehicle.
That picture is hilarious! After a bit of research I see that there ARE safety issues with Lada automobiles...
The World needs Putin Control.

Venezuela: Maduro signs decree to control car prices
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has signed a decree controlling the price of new and second-hand cars.

This story is about Russia car market. Not the US car market. Weird, I even have to point that out
Cannot believe the list of Russian car sales include two Renault models (they’re pulling out of the market, though).
I owned a 1964 Renault Dauphin that had practially everything go wrong a 20 year old car would have——the first four years brand new. Miserable.
Russia:
What is the common problem of Renault Duster?
Like all diesel cars, if you don’t drive your Duster on lengthy motorway journeys every so often, the DPF will likely become clogged. When this happens, your vehicle will usually go into limp mode and may struggle to start.
The model will be discontinued but will have a version in India.
A dictator issuing orders to private industry is a core principle of dirigisme, which itself is a key tenet of fascism.
Putin is a fascist dictator. Fact.
Biden and Trudope are neo-socialists. They’re also just tools of their deep state bureacrats.
Putin, to his credit, is actually in charge.
Dude, you’re harshing their Zeep.
So many lies in one article.
Renault has different lineups. The one where Duster belongs is ong the sturdiest cars in the world. Diesel is optional, most of them are with the 2 liter l4.

In the early 1970’s a school chum had had a RAY-NO, in cold weather he had to always park front-outward because it would start in drive and take off.
After a lap or two of the parking lot, it would go into neutral.
Unlike most cars in our group, the RAY-NO would start.
Lowest car sales on record. So much winning!

One of the nicest compliments about Putin I have ever heard!
That and he is biodegradable.
I wonder if his high heels are biodegradeable?
