House Republicans elected Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), the chief of their campaign team,to be House majority whip in a closed-door conference vote on Tuesday, ending a closely-fought race with Reps. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) and Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.).
The conference separately voted to elect Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) as majority leader by voice vote. Scalise had been serving as minority whip. Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was elected Speaker-designate. A vote on the House floor will eventually determine the Speakership.

“Silent” Tom?
Geez...
Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was elected Speaker-designate.
Seriously?
Being from Louisiana and formerly active in GOP politics for many years, I’ve been around Scalise a few times years ago when he was a state legislator. He was what we used to call a “movement” conservative. I hope he doesn’t come down with a terminal case of Potomac Fever.
Just look what happened to our senator that took out Mary Landrieu in 2014, Bill Cassidy. He got infected quicker than most.
“Descent picks IMHO”
They are done in darkness. No input or fear from the people that elected them. :(
Shouldn’t they pick Speaker when the new elected show up ?
Yeah because Emmersdid such a great job getting republicans elected. Good grief, talk about rewarding mediocrity.
‘Descent picks...’ is right.
both are GOPe to the max.
I was going to say.
That made me kind of gasp!
It must be Tom’s ‘turn’ to serve as Whip.
No, Banks is much better that RINO Emmer.
RINOS! RINOS! RINOS! /sarc
Not. Emmer is quintessential swamp. VERY bad.
Shouldn’t they pick Speaker when the new elected show up ?
That’s what a lot of people are saying today.....I agree.
I'm just gonna go ahead and say it: Milquetoast McCarthy is a worthless POS and will do absolutely NOTHING to advance the Conservative cause in the HoR.
He's the absolute WORST the Republican party can pick for Speaker.
I’ve known Kennedy for a number of years. He switched to GOP in 2007.
House Republicans have elected Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) to another term as conference chair during a closed-door, secret-ballot election on Tuesday.
Stefanik defeated a challenge from freshman Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), one of two Black Republicans currently serving in the House, in a 144-74.
The race for conference chair was in a way a microcosm of the divide within the Republican Party on whether or not former President Trump should remain a prominent figure in the GOP. Stefanik, a close proponent of the former president, endorsed Trump ahead of his likely 2024 campaign announcement, while Donalds has not.
Donalds on Monday denied claims that he had told colleagues he preferred Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) over Trump for 2024, asserting “I respect both men because I think the next president is coming from Florida.”
