My wife and I made sure to note the place on our last trip to San Francisco.
We then said we didn’t want to get within a mile of it, after we (furtively?) did our shopping.

The fill underneath the building is unstable—it was built on the ruins of the 1907 earthquake.

Perfect. We just need 42,000 packages. ;-)

It needs to come down. That’s the only cure for a “sinker.”

No kidding. I was watching bricklayers and they’d throw a brick up to the guy on the scaffolding. The brick would just sit there in the air for a while, like the Roadrunner Cartoons, and then the guy up there would grab it. It really seemed to defy gravity. Never saw a miss.

The problem is that it wasn’t built on bedrock, and they tried to use friction piling instead. But that didn’t work.
Injecting cement or concrete won’t solve the problem; it will just displace the soft ground underneath it.
