Russia Tried to Absorb a Ukrainian City. It Didn’t Work.
The New York Times ^ | November 14, 2022 | Andrew E. Kramer

Iryna Dyagileva’s daughter attended a school where the curriculum included memorizing the Russian national anthem. But teachers ignored it, instead quietly greeting students in the morning with a salute: “Glory to Ukraine!”

The occupation authorities asked Olha Malyarchuk, a clerk at a taxi company, to settle bills in rubles. But she kept paying in Ukrainian currency, the hryvnia.

“It just didn’t work,” Ms. Malyarchuk said of the Russian propaganda that was beamed into televisions and plastered on billboards for the nine months of Russia’s occupation of Kherson. On Sunday, she was walking in a park, waving a small Ukrainian flag.

One roadside billboard proclaimed in bold text, “We are together with Russia!” But a teenager who offered only his first name, Oleksandr, had shinned up the supporting pole and was tearing the sign to pieces. Asked how he felt, he said, “Free.”

The Ukrainian Army, defying the odds after its much more powerful neighbor invaded in February, has reclaimed hundreds of villages and towns in three major counteroffensives north of Kyiv, in the northeastern Kharkiv region and now in the southern Kherson region.

But the city of Kherson stands out: It was the focus of an ambitious Russian campaign to assimilate the citizenry and stamp out Ukrainian identity — a goal President Vladimir V. Putin harbored for all of Ukraine had his military been more successful, judging by his assertions that Ukrainians and Russians are one nation.

In Kherson, national songs were banned. Speaking Ukrainian could lead to arrest. Schools adopted Russian curriculums, and young students were to be told that they were Russians, not Ukrainians.

In the early days of the city’s liberation, it appears that those Russian efforts were largely futile, at least among those who remained in the city as Ukrainian forces approached.

Russification failed in Kherson but thousands, including kids, were kidnapped and deported to Russia, just like Stalin used to do.

No surprise. Last census-Kherson Oblast is 82% Ukrainian and 14% Russian.

While everyone is celebrating the victory and the capture of Kherson, real diplomacy is taking place elsewhere, and we were not even invited there as observers. Again, the thesis about the inadmissibility of “negotiations about Ukraine without Ukraine” becomes relevant, but the office of president or our honest journalists will not write about this.

Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Sergey Naryshkin arrived in Ankara as part of a Russian delegation to negotiate with the United States. The American delegation is led by CIA Director William Burns.

Discussions on the Sullivan formula are actively ongoing, with contacts between the US and Russia rising sharply in the past month.

Its not a 'capture', its an actual liberation of an occupied Ukrainian city.

This shows the failure of Russian tactics under Putin.

In the 1990s, the Ukrainian identity was weak - most people would say “we are from here” meaning a local identity, not Russian, not Ukrainian.

But Putin’s invasion in 2014 and his actions leading up to that over the decade built up a sense of identity.

And now, thanks to Putin’s 2nd invasion in February 2022, he has created a fervent sense of Ukrainian identity - that’s thanks to Putin.

If, instead, Russia had continued in the way of Yeltsin and used soft power - art, culture, literature, music, television, films etc., then Ukrainian identity would be as weak as Belarusian - actually weaker.

Putin by his invasion actually gave Ukrainian identity a massive boost.

you Russians see how badly your army is losing and so are trying to sue for peace to keep your ill gotten gains.

Fine - leave Ukrainian territory in totality and then peace talks can start.

Militarily, I have never understood the the Russian occupation of Kherson.

Kherson has a solid land connection to Ukraine territory on three sides.

It has only one connection to Russian territory - on the south - and it has to move its army across several miles of water and marsh land just to get back to solid ground.

There is no russian land bridge to Crimea without Kherson Oblast. Also, the canal that feeds water from the Dnieper River to Crimea runs through Kherson Oblast.

And Putin also wanted Odessa and then Moldova further west, to landlock Ukraine.

That’s been the problem for Russia, they are fighting battles for political reasons not military ones.

Time and again Russian soldiers have been ask to die to hold an indefensible piece of land because giving it up would cause Putin embarrassment.

Putin by his invasion actually gave Ukrainian identity a massive boost.

There were many articles on how Putin's 8 year war(started in 2014) with Ukraine, cemented Ukrainian sense of identity.

Re: "There is no Russian land bridge to Crimea without Kherson"

I disagree - the Russians control the entire southern and far east coast of the Sea of Azov.

It is my understanding they also control 100% of Crimea, including the land bridge at Kerch.
