The top 10 most-regretted college majors — and the degrees graduates wish they had pursued instead
CNBC ^

Even with college application season in full swing, many families are questioning whether a four-year degree is still worth it.

Some experts say the value of a bachelor’s degree is fading and more emphasis should be directed toward career training. A growing number of companies, including many in tech, are also dropping degree requirements for many middle-skill and even higher-skill roles.

...

Still, 44% of all job seekers with college degrees regret their field of study.

Journalism, sociology, communications and education all topped the list of most-regretted college majors, according to ZipRecruiter’s survey of more than 1,500 college graduates who were looking for a job.

...

Of graduates who regretted their major, most said that, if they could go back, they would now choose computer science or business administration instead.

What an interesting chart. I started college in 1965 as a pre-med major, due mostly to the pre-programming of family members who fed this to me as the road to success. I made the mistake of dating my chem lab partner and we both almost flunked out. I asked a fraternity brother what I could major in where there were a lot of nice-looking girls and no requirement for a foreign language. He said “Check out the School of Journalism” I did, and asked a professor this question: which career path in journalism offers the best compensation?” He replied without hesitation: “The advertising sequence”. I enjoyed a highly successful career in advertising, was paid quite well for my work, and would do it all over again given the chance. One other thing I learned: don’t believe everything you read in the “news”. We knew it for what it was: propaganda.

Tony Spiva at the University of Tennessee had one axiom that was all what was needed to pass his economics and the entire course was summed up with this, “there ain't no such thing as a free lunch.”

Learning basic math would help. I was at a chicken fast food restaurant and the total came to $7.95. So I gave the young woman $8.20 in order to get rid of some small change and expecting to get back a quarter and she kept staring at the money and at me and then called her supervisor who finally gave me the quarter.

Chances are that many started in the Least-regretted, couldn't hack it, and ended up in the Most-regretted college majors.

When the CEO polled us about a potential move to QB Online, the vote was unanimously AGAINST it.

I would not trust my company's accounting to SaaS (Software as a Service). Upgrades/updates are mandated even when unwanted, and moving off the platform is usually excruciatingly difficult, even when pricing goes haywire.

When my small company that I ran IT for was in bankruptcy, and forced downsizing, I knew that accounting would be spared. I joked that they would be the last ones out of the building, and I would have been right had the company not been bought by another with its own accountants.

Accounting, like Electrical Engineering, is a great discipline to master, and I have always heard that the CPA certification is among the most rigorous. You chose well, and wise, prudent women are drawn to accountants once they figure out how the world works a bit.

I was good at math until they quit using numbers and took to using the alphabet.

3 decades ago one our sons was graduated from a good state college with an engineering degree.

The country was going through rough economic times, and the company he had worked summers and weekends went bankrupt just before his graduation.

So we made out a new resume, bought him a suit/tie for inter
viewing. 2 weeks later he had an even better job offer than the one from the failed company.

One of our church ladies a teacher asked him, how he got a job when other college grads couldn’t get an interview.

He told her, he had a real degree in engineering not an IUD, Instant Unemployment Degree. She is still mad about his reality label IUD, Instant Unemployment Degree.

Lern2Code. Some might not be happy with it, but you can dry your tears with paper money. Lots of it.

Of graduates who regretted their major, most said that, if they could go back, they would now choose computer science or business administration instead.

But they picked the majors they did because they didn't like or couldn't do math.

So this wishful thinking looks like wishful thinking on their part.

Thanks, your same good MD logic applies to starting jobs with Walmart.

They offer free online college courses to their full time workers.

My wife worked as the lead RN in a local Family Practice group and retired a decade ago. The full time Walmart employees had one of the best health plans in this area.

African studies. ROTFL! Not everybody in Africa was really a King or Queen. That’s only in those wacky Disney Movies for Dummies.

To qualify as a "king" you need subjects. At least 10,000. Less than that, you are just a village chief.

The kings were the ones selling their more useless subjects to the slavers.

It makes more sense to sell your shiftless and criminals to slavers. At least then you get some revenue.

“Now, writing for high level hospital administrators….that’s a good gig!”

Or a young single RN, who works PM shifts as a lead RN in ICU’s or ER’s. A real RN and is not an over educated old maid or a political hack.

If any administrator, who tries to jerk around an employee like this RN example, the other RNs would kill the he/she/it adm thug.

We used to joke about scholarship athletes taking basket weaving but at least they learned something sorta useful.

Basket weaving and coaching at a good private high school.
