Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro said he has “a mandate and a responsibility” to bring people together as he previewed how his administration will take shape during a radio tour Friday.
“I’ll be a governor for all 13 million Pennsylvanians, whether you voted for me or not,” Shapiro said on WILK-AM in Wilkes-Barre.
Shapiro, whose lead over GOP state Sen. Doug Mastriano was 14 points as of Friday, received the most votes of any governor candidate in history with more than 2.9 million, reported ABC27.
During his radio appearances, Shapiro, the current state attorney general, said his three top priorities will be investing more in public education, improving public safety and growing the state’s economy.
“These are hardly hyper-partisan issues,” he said. “There’s a lot we can do together and that is what is going to be my focus.”
With votes still being counted, Democrats are on pace to flip the state House while Republicans will maintain control of the Senate.
Shapiro told KDKA in Pittsburgh that his first budget would include funding for municipalities to hire more police officers. He also vowed to work to bring police and communities together to address crime issues.
“You’re going to see us work together effectively,” he said.
Without mentioning Mastriano’s name, Shapiro said voters sent a message about abortion rights on Tuesday. “Clearly, the voters rejected my opponent and agreed with me that we need to let women control their own bodies.”
Mastriano opposes abortion without exceptions and Republicans in the General Assembly have taken steps to get a question about abortion rights onto a state referendum.
On KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia, Shapiro promised to protect reproductive and voting rights from any legislative attempts to restrict them.
“I will use my veto pen to stop bad things that come to my desk from the Legislature,” Shapiro said, according to PoliticsPa.com.
Shapiro was asked by the KYW hosts if Mastriano had conceded the race yet.
“No, but honestly, who cares?” replied Shapiro. “The people pick the winner not him, so it doesn’t really matter what he says.”
Mastriano, meanwhile, lashed out at Shapiro and former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Twitter for recognizing Veterans Day.
Shapiro told veterans that he would “have your back every day as Governor” and would work to repay them for their service.
Mastriano, an Army veteran, responded in two separate posts, sharing photos of himself in uniform and adding in one, “Your campaign’s malicious attack on this 30 year veteran speaks volumes.”
When Clinton also thanked veterans in a Tweet, Mastriano replied, “Your political party enjoys attacking veterans,” with the same photo of himself.
Shapiro said that an announcement on his transition to the governor’s office will come next week.
“I want to build a team that looks like the people of Pennsylvania, that is going to challenge me every day,” Shapiro said on WILK.
“I don’t like to surround myself with a whole bunch of, like, ‘yes people,’ he said. “I like to surround myself with people who challenge me every day, so I think when you do that, frankly, you get a better result.”
A WILK host asked Shapiro what plans he and family had this weekend after months of non-stop campaigning.
“We’re going to, like, wear sweatpants and hang out,” he said laughing. “Just, like, be a regular family and try and take it easy.”
"Presumptive Governor-elect" would be more accurate.
Pennsylvania Ping!
Please ping me with articles of interest.
FReepmail me to be added to the list.
In plain English, he thinks he has a mandate to issue mandates “for all”.
Pa has “mail-in” voting, yes?
No way there will ever be an honest election there as long as that it the situation.
Shapiro can go frack himself.
For all? Certainly not for the fracking industry.
He’s all yours Pennsylvania, embrace the suck.
Satanist Shapiro will help sexually mutilate children without their parents’ knowledge. Pennsylvanians chose this.

OK, given 2.9 million votes, how many individual persons actually voted for him? A million individuals? A half million maybe? I doubt we will ever know what the real number of people voting for him were.
With elections in the US now the way they are, I do not believe any of the numbers that the liars in government or the liars in the media convey.
In my fairly conservative County roughly 1/3 of the total ballots cast were by mail (including traditional absentee).
Altogether about a 65% turnout....44% in person in my district, the rest VBM.
And Colorado too.
Maybe he means a guy named Lance..
With 70%-80% of the country that thinks we are on the wrong track, but a record number turns out to support the same? Oh sure, I recognize liberal women are highly motivated to kill their children, but with high gas prices, inflation, attacks on coal mining, etc, was the motivating factor enough to record support?
Aw, how cute; he’s aping Biden.
Isn’t this the same guy who said that he will ban fracking in PA?
That is BS. Trump endorced Mastriano after his poll numbers made it obvious he would win. Then he flew his plane to PA to stump for Mastriano. What did you do?
Dominion won PA. Along with idiots who voted for a brain dead guy who then had a stroke.
You never Trumpers need to step off.
You’re absolutely right, ONLY A MACHINE WOULD VOTE FOR A DEAD GUY.
Does PA need a building to fall on it.
LOL! Yeah. Okay.
PA is trying to become the new home for “Florida Man”
