As the United Nations COP27 climate conference kicked off this week in Egypt, UN Secretary-General António Guterres proclaimed that the world is on a "highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator." To keep temperature from rising 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels by 2100, we need to pump the brakes on greenhouse gas emissions. Hard.
Earth will exceed the 1.5 degree mark in the coming decades -- an "overshoot" scenario -- before potentially coming back down by the end of the century. Can we limit this overshoot? And how might we do that?
A study, released Thursday in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change, tried to answer those questions by modeling 27 different emissions reduction pathways of varying ambition. It came to an unsurprising conclusion: Countries need to act by increasing the ambition of their climate pledges. And they need to act now.
The models and simulations they've built show we are likely to see more extreme weather events, in addition to glacial melt, sea level rise that threatens many low-lying Pacific nations and significant loss of biodiversity once temperatures push past an increase of 1.5 degrees.
While overshooting 1.5 is bad (and it is bad), 2 degrees of warming is even worse. This study goes further to showing the 1.5 degree target is practically dead, but the situation isn't hopeless. Now more than ever, there's reason to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting more ambitious goals.

What is nature is trying to raise the temperature for some reason we dont know about? In the not too distant past we have had warming and cooling trends before hairspray was a thing.

Just curious, how many lbs of CO2 does an average person produce per year? The Elites may be willing to trade human lives to cut CO2 levels. That’s simply EVIL!

Bingo! History shows us that a warmer climate is optimum for life. People in prior warm periods knew this. They were glad they didn’t live during one of the cooling periods like their ancestors. But today’s cult leaders deny science and say the Modern Warm Period is somehow a bad thing.
It is absolutely complete and utter BS, the real danger of this how the various governments react to this.
My prediction, just like Covid, the various governments, especially the USA, will declare a “Climate Emergency” and begin to implement severe reductions of greenhouse gases thru government edicts, totally bypassing the legislative process.

Who would even notice a “1.5 degree C” increase over 77 years?
