Lottery accused of 'systemic racism' after massive Powerball payout

A CNN piece on Wednesday spoke with critics knocking the lottery system as a form of systemic racism that targets poor Black and Brown communities across America.

The largest Powerball jackpot lottery ticket ever was recently sold in Altadena, California, with one lucky resident winning a historic $2.04 billion. The odds were 1 in 292.2 million.

Researchers told CNN that despite the extremely low chance of winning, state lotteries still aggressively market the lottery and sell tickets to low-income communities at higher rates, thus misleading Americans to believe it will help them quickly generate wealth.

Lottery doesn’t target race, it targets the innumerate.

The odds were 1 in 292.2 million to win $2.04 billion. We should have just bought every combination of numbers for a sure win.

But, but ... if they restricted lottery sales in poor 'hoods, that would be racism too, right?

“The Lottery, with its weekly pay-out of enormous prizes, was the one public event to which the proles paid serious attention. It was probable that there were some millions of proles for whom the Lottery was the principal if not the only reason for remaining alive. It was their delight, their folly, their anodyne, their intellectual stimulant. Where the Lottery was concerned, even people who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory. There was a whole tribe of men who made their living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets. Winston had nothing to do with the Lottery, which was managed by the Ministry of Plenty, but he was aware (indeed everyone in the party was aware) that the prizes were largely imaginary. Only small sums were actually paid out, the winners of the big prizes being nonexistent persons.”

― George Orwell, 1984

***************************************************************

“So long as they (the Proles) continued to work and breed, their other activities were without importance. Left to themselves, like cattle turned loose upon the plains of Argentina, they had reverted to a style of life that appeared to be natural to them, a sort of ancestral pattern...Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult.”
― George Orwell, 1984

A tax on people who don’t know math ...

Except I do know math and throwing everything I could think of at the problem I created a wheel for the Texas Lottery representing just 10 numbers in 5 pair out of 54.

In 6 actual plays I only lost 70% of my money ... which is both remarkable by beating published odds by a wide margin and also helping to show that knowing the math doesn’t really help.

Nothing about being a minority of any kind negates your free will. It also does not prevent you from learning that if you do something repeatedly and it doesn't reap a benefit (but rather results in a loss) you should probably stop.

To believe such things about any group is racism, pure and simple.

Poor people give rich people money.

And they do it gladly, happily, because of the giddy moment
when they, too, might be a little bit like the rich.

Imagination is a powerful opiate.
