Three main factors are contributing to the dangerous situation on the coast.
Nicole’s storm surge, which peaked at around 6 feet Thursday morning, is significant because of how massive the storm was as it approached Florida on Wednesday, with tropical-storm-force winds stretching for more than 500 miles.
That storm surge pushed ashore on top of exceptionally high tides associated with this week’s full moon.
And behind it all, sea level in this part of Florida has risen more than a foot in the past 100 years, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and most of that rise has occurred in the past three decades.

If the sea level in "this part of Florida" has risen wouldn't the sea level pretty much have risen everywhere?
Well Arizona used to be underneath a huge inland sea…and now it’s not. So.
From a structural stand point, today’s the pool deck collapse didn’t take the building. It will be interesting to see what NIST has to say about the Surfside condo collapse after today’s events..
Well look on the glass half full side, at least the water hasn’t risen

I agree. More likely that Florida has SUBSIDED by a foot in many locations.

You really do learn something new every day. Unless you are sleeping off a bad hangover or are in a medically-induced coma. In which case you’d be lucky to just remember tomorrow all the stuff you learned on prior days.
