Barely back home from his November 4 encounter with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz found himself on the premises of the former Berlin Kindl brewery on Saturday afternoon for a policy debate with 1,000 invited members of his Social Democratic Party (SPD).
The most important and overriding outcome of his Beijing trip, Scholz told his comrades, was his and Xi’s joint appeal to Russia not to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine. “That alone made the trip worthwhile,” Scholz said.
A leading member of the Scholz delegation who requested anonymity told me that the discussion wasn’t limited to the Ukraine war. Both Scholz and Xi both voiced concerns over current US-China tensions and agreed on the need to avoid future military confrontation. The chancellor was accompanied inter alia by 12 CEOs of top German companies.
The delegation member said that Scholz and his closest advisers see an imminent possibility that Beijing will react sharply to the US chips embargo on China sooner rather than later. “China will not be able to sit on its hands if its ability to progress economically is seriously and deliberately undermined. … It’s an undeclared war, but a war all the same,” the official stated.
In his public exchange of views with Xi, Scholz said that “China is an important economic and trade partner of Germany and Europe, firmly supports trade liberalization, supports globalization and opposes decoupling.”
He added, “Germany is willing to continue to deepen economic and trade cooperation with China, and supports enterprises of the two countries to conduct investment cooperation in each other. … The world needs a multipolar pattern, and the role and influence of emerging countries deserve attention. … Germany will play its due role in promoting the development of EU-China relations.”
The key words in the chancellor’s public statements were, of course, opposition to “decoupling” and the need for a “multipolar pattern.”
“The most important and overriding outcome of his Beijing trip, Scholz told his comrades, was his and Xi’s joint appeal to Russia not to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine. “That alone made the trip worthwhile,” Scholz said.”
LOL. Xi never said anything like this.
Reminds me of Nazi Germany making a treaty with Communist Russia.
It was my impression that some German companies have already left China
One wonders if the CEO’s were dragged along unwillingly
They didn’t even shake hands when they met in front of cameras . Later , Scholz on his knees begging for help from China .
Maybe it is true, but more companies are moving from Germany to China for sure.
Citation please? What companies?
“The chancellor was accompanied inter alia by 12 CEOs of top German companies.”
THIS is the real reason for the trip. These companies can no longer manufacture in Germany due to the Neocon Suicide-Sanctions driving up the cost of fuel massively. So now they’re going to be trying to move it all to China, with the hope that they can at least still manage the operations and make some money off them.
...except that’s only good for 10 years or so, as China also demands the trade secrets and will get their own manufacturing set up to take over the work, as they’ve done many, many, times in the past.
It’s a feel good meeting and declaration. But Russia will act in its best interest and use the level of force that need to minimize their casualties and fallout. I hope they don’t use their nukes but I will assume if Russia is Going to lose Crimea all bets are off.
The Germans remember how their former Axis partners the Japanese reacted to US competition for economic resources in the Far East
On the contrary, the US is trying to do much the same to China as it is doing to Germany
The Germans have grounds to consider a strategic alliance with China as a counter to US hegemony esp now that the US and Britain overplayed their hand by destroying the Nordstream pipelines to limit German options for independent economic policies.
When/As China proceeds with its “ One Belt” transEurasia project…Germany will be the western terminus. Scholz already agreed to sell China a 25% stake in Germany’s largest port, Hamburg, despite opposition from virtually his entire govt.
The only sources consistently and darkly warning about Russia using nuc weapons in Ukraine…are western “experts” from Washington and London.
Whose “ intel” plant stories daily in mainstream media to frighten the public into considering Putin as a madman, and a tactical nuclear response ( or preemption) by the West as justifiable and winnable.
OK...... apparently the German de coupling has ceased or at least being curtailed.
Look at the costs of making business in Europe.
I look at the failing Volkswagen conglomerate that derives most of it’s profits from China.
All the companies mentioned will become the vassels of their China 51% pardners. However living is I guess better than dying
You got to remember that the Chinese will tell you anything that they think you’d like to hear. Then go about doing what they want to do anyway.
An ass kissing mission is more like it.
Lack of energy is causing German industries to cut back and close. He is probably looking for Chinese help, rather than American.
“There is limited European enthusiasm for following Anglo-American imperialism.”
Thank you comrade.
Peace in our time.
— Even the German populace doesn’t support this.
It’s deep state 100%
