Ciccarelli says over the years, he watched DePape’s steady descent into extremism. It started when DePape would turn off NPR news in the morning on the way to jobsites.
I have been turning off NPR for 30 years. Not a gradual process.

No, no. I think you misread it.
It started when DePape would turn off NPR news in the morning on the way to jobsites.
It says that watching NPR was apparently the only thing keeping him from becoming a right-wing extremist.
