When Frank Ciccarelli hired David DePape, he was homeless and living under a tree in Berkeley’s Aquatic Park.
But he was quiet, likeable and a steady worker building decks with Ciccarelli for six years, he recalled Monday. And politically liberal.
Three years ago, Ciccarelli worked out a way for DePape to move into a converted garage in Richmond. It was that single car structure with a plywood floor that the FBI searched over the weekend.
Ciccarelli says over the years, he watched DePape’s steady descent into extremism. It started when DePape would turn off NPR news in the morning on the way to jobsites.
“It was a gradual process – it was over six years,” he said, “day by day.”
While normally quiet, DePape eventually began to repeat talking points that Ciccarelli recognized as being espoused in right wing circles.
Ciccarelli says he last saw Depape when he paid him three days before the attack. He says what happened at the Pelosi’s home shocked him.
But he says there were signs of mental illness. Recently, he said, DePape started talking about building a physical home for an imaginary fairy.

Repeat that please....frankie hires ILLEGALS AND DOES NOT SO GOOD WORK......HMMMM. DEFINITELY A DEMOCRAT!
A lot of Bernie Bros saw that Hillary cheated to beat him in the primaries in 2016, and became Trump supporters as a result.
Now, there’s nothing to indicate this guy fit that profile, but it was a thing a r/The_Donald back then.
$10 it was Terry Gross and "Fresh Air." That smarmy dingbat would drive anyone insane.
His “extremism” began when he quit being indoctrinated every morning by NPR.
He woke up from years of that indoctrination and realized he had been lied to for years and all his friends and family applauded all the lying. Enough to drive a person mad.
I can’t stand that oh-so-condescending tone she manages to project.
He was a little weird, but he was the one who introduced me to FR so he wasn’t all bad. Plus this was NPR in the 90s, so it was still a lot of classical music and boring Prairie Home Companion and less crazy leftie commentary.
He was probably picking him up and driving him to work. Had NPR on the radio, and the guy would turn it off.
No, no. I think you misread it.
It started when DePape would turn off NPR news in the morning on the way to jobsites.
It says that watching NPR was apparently the only thing keeping him from becoming a right-wing extremist.
He was probably being paid under the table, but if he was in SF, he probably got hit with a fee or a tax for every move he made. Hell, the guy didn’t think the government should be telling him he had to wear clothes. Complaining about overbearing government might be seen as “ right-wing talking points” by some.
Just listening to something doesn't damage your heart and soul.
So this industrial giant Frank, paid his number one helper guy, Hammerhead, just enough money to live in a plywood box? Got it. Yeah, sure. And he had an AM radio? right!
And Ol Paul said he was a friend? Probably used to swap queer jokes at happy hour after laying some shingles? Guess we need to know if Nanzi knew that Paul-the-crash was slumming with the hoy paloy?
I thought boss guy meant DePape would turn off NPR when they arrived at job site. He was in boss’ car. He didn’t ask boss to change station? Boss didn’t say DePape turned off NPR cuz he said it was BS.
Why didn’t cops react when DePape started? He was able to repeatedly smash Pelosi’s skull, while they thought about what to do?
Exactamundo!
I will read that article about Pelosi’s dad’s mob connections later (reminder for me).
Okay, more links to check out later.
Looks like good articles.
Who is Catbert?
I used to listen to NPR sometimes in 80’s and 90’s. I don’t remember anything I heard. Maybe lunchtime?
