I’m in PA, and every single one of the *cities* mentioned is a rapidly deteriorating liberal shithole.
Harrisburg: 84% for Biden in 2020
York: 70%
Reading: 72%
Allentown: 67%
Lancaster: 73%
They’ve all got reprehensible local (Democrat) governments too. There’s nothing demographically good about these cities, either.
But the article claims they are referring to “metro areas”. Some of these areas — outside the city limits — are not bad but I still don’t get what makes them great areas to retire. For one thing, don’t old folks like warmer climates? And do they really like to have to drive in snow (does anybody)?
York County outside of the city is a pretty good area. Lancaster County fits the same description. But Dauphin County even outside the cesspool of Harrisburg isn’t altogether too great these days.
6 of those places have snow in the winter, and legit cold.
6 of those 10 places are at real risk of blue governments
I live in rural N Ga on 3+ lakeside acres. It’s paid for, and when I turn 70 (sooner than I would like) the taxes drop to insignificance.
Snow lasts til noon. It’s pretty until then, and we get it about twice a winter.
I can pee in the backyard AND the frontyard. (old country joke)
The area is covered up in retired military - old-school military.
Good healthcare in 11 miles away. Great healthcare in 34 miles away.
Pleasant neighbors, family lives within 70 miles.
Yeah, we are retiring right here.
In addition, Harrisburg’s beautiful riverfront has been invaded by homeless persons, and all their baggage.
There is no plan to remove these troublesome indigents from Riverfront Park, or from under the bridges.
Harrisburg is deteriorating rapidly.
They have their selection weighted on no taxing retirement income.
I wouldn’t live in Pa, your state taxes have to support too many urban garbage dumps!
“I live between 1 & 2 with zero intentions to live here much longer.”

Soon as my youngest is out of college-—GONE!!
I’ve lived several of those places.
The rural area along the Susquehanna River near Lewisburg beats the metro areas mentioned.
Yeah if you want to give your money away, PA is one of the most highly taxed states around, lol, it is a lie
And cold winters and crappy roads, with salt that eats your cars up, great choice there, derp
I hate to let out the secret, but Marjorie Taylor Green’s district in northwest Georgia has some beautiful spots. Small towns, lots of farmland and good people.
Forget it, Jake - it’s USNews-town...
What a bunch of malarky !
I lived in FL for 40 years (just moved to TN a year ago). The insurance there is crippling and it’s only going to get worse after Ian.
I rank PA right up there with GITMO.
The Lewisburg area attracts many affluent retirees.
It is surrounded by great natural beauty, has excellent medical care, plus it has many cultural activities (Bucknell.)
Outdoor activities like hiking and biking are topnotch, and there are many opportunities for hunting and fishing.
I wish I could afford to live there.
We are in Carbon County. Our property taxes are not bad, we have 3.5 acres on a nice quiet street near Beltzville lake.
A question I ask myself all the time is stay or leave? For what we have I don’t think we could do much better cost of living wise. On the other hand I would like something warmer.
Anyway, The Lehigh Valley is getting expensive and crime in Allentown and Reading is not that good. I was very surprised to see half of the suggested places in PA. As far as taxing retirement income it’s not the best it’s not the worse.
I know quite a few elderly couples of fled Ann Arbor because of the cold and snow.
The idea that it’s a good place for retirement is hilariously ludicrous.
If you want to stay sane stay away from Ann Arbor. A woke cesspool.
I have a first cousin, who is like a younger brother.
He and his wife retired to Naples and love it. He could have been a pro golfer and still plays 9 to 18 holes each morning. They live in one of the compounds on a golf course.
He grew up in Kansas, worked and lived in the DC/NJ and Penn. areas. If they never see snow again, both he and his wife will be happy.
One of our direct DNA pool offspring is interested in that area to fish and live with fellow conservatives.
His wife would love to wear bermuda shorts or a bathing suit everyday.
They have an adult child trying to get mentally ready for her 6th winter in the NE area. She would probably relocate in a NJ minute to Naples if her parents lived there.
Florida has no state income tax on income from any source and has no death tax.
I'm not against Pennsylvania, my wife and I both went to school there, and our daughter lives there. It's a better place to retire to than New York, at least IMO.
But Pennsylvania had 36 Congressional seats from 1913-1933 and subsequent census results reduced the number to 17 for 2022. Pennsylvanians have been voting with their feet for decades.
(I think I could come up with a model to rank practically any place on the planet as a great place to retire, depending on the weightings put on the factors. The cost of living is in Ukraine is a lot lower than either Florida or Pennsylvania.)
Just don’t come to Texas. If’n the rattlesnakes and scorpions don’t gitcha, MS-13, the chupacabra, a tornado, and/or a hurricane will.
Pennsylvania ranked #3 in the US in 2019 sending former residents to Florida. (New York was #1!)
Every place listed is on the East Coast. So, nowhere else in the Country is good for retirement?
