Russia suspends U.N.-brokered grain export deal
MSN - LA Times ^ | October 29, 2022 | Andrew Meldrum

Russia announced Saturday that it will immediately suspend its implementation of a U.N.-brokered grain deal that has seen more than 9 million tons of grain exported from Ukraine during the war and has brought down soaring global food prices. ...

The Russian declaration came one day after United Nations chief Antonio Guterres urged Russia and Ukraine to renew the grain export deal, which was scheduled to expire on Nov. 19. Guterres also urged other countries, mainly in the West, to expedite the removal of obstacles blocking Russian grain and fertilizer exports.

The U.N. chief said the grain deal — brokered by the United Nations and Turkey in July — helps "to cushion the suffering that this global cost-of-living crisis is inflicting on billions of people,” his spokesman said.

9 million tons of grain will make a lot of bread. What are the normal amounts shipped?

Commander in Chief Catatonic Joe has weighed in on this on behalf of America. He’s “outraged” and sees “no merit” to Russia’s decision.

Attacking this effort is a direct violation of the deal brokered by Turkey with the UN, that the parties agreed to. This is probably reason enough for Russia to be pissed right off.

On October 29, the Ukrainian armed forces, under the cover of a humanitarian corridor created as part of the implementation of the “Black Sea initiative” for the export of Ukrainian agricultural products, launched massive air and sea strikes using unmanned vehicles against ships and infrastructure of the Russian Black Sea Fleet at the naval base in Sevastopol.

Under the cover of a grain deal, ammunition was delivered to Ukraine through the ports of Greater Odessa.

As a result Russia has suspended it’s participation in the deal for an indefinite period. It also says it cannot guarantee the safety of ships transporting grain.....not clear what this means in practice

‼️ 🇷🇺 ́ The Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation on the suspension of the deal after the attack on the Navy ships:

▪️ Russia is ready to supply up to 500 thousand tons of grain to the poorest countries free of charge in the next four months.
▪️ And taking into account this year’s harvest, the Russian Federation is fully ready to replace Ukrainian grain and supply at reasonable prices to all interested countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation stated that the “grain deal” was suspended indefinitely, because “the Russian side can no longer guarantee the safety of civilian bulk carriers.”

The other important news is that Russia has publicly accused the UK of being behind the attack on the Black Sea Fleet and even more importantly, being one of the organisers and executors of the sabotage on the North Streams 1 & 2

In connection with the attack, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, issued a statement:

“The Russian side intends to draw the attention of the international community, including at the UN Security Council, to the series of terrorist attacks committed against the Russian Federation in the Black and Baltic Seas, including the involvement of Britain in them.”

Presumably, most of you have already seen the video of the naval drone attack on Sevastopol.

For those who might have missed it..here it is

Cyberspec News, [10/29/2022 4:09 PM]
On October 29 the first large scale strike on Sevastopol in the history of the current “special operation”.

According to the MOD, a total of 9 unmanned aerial vehicles and 7 autonomous marine drones were involved in the attack on the city and the fleet. At the same time, their targets were not only the berths of the main fleet base, but also ships that were on combat duty at anchor in the outer roadstead.

As far as can be judged, it was on the outer roadstead that the Ivan Golubets minesweeper received minor explosive damage, according to the MOD. Since it is part of the 68th brigade of ships of the water area protection, which is based in the Southern Bay. And the Southern Bay, although it was attacked on Saturday, but the enemy naval drone damage there, according to official data, was caused only to the boom-net barrier covering the approaches to the berths. Therefore, the Ivan Golubets was not at its regular berth, but at sea.

One of the marine drones that was captured back in September and similar craft from around the world....it’s reportedly called AUV SeaCat...detials below 👇

Cyberspec News, [10/29/2022 4:18 PM]
Our military personnel, who examined a craft that was beached back in September haven’t commented on details.

Acc to the publication “Maritime Executive”, this is an autonomous uninhabited underwater vehicle AUV SeaCat designed to search for mines. Moreover, the “cats” function is only a search and detection of objects located under water at depths of up to 100 meters. What it detects, in the basic version, should be finished off by combat swimmers or minesweepers.

But AUV SeaCat can also do some damage on its own.

Maritime Executive writes:

“This small autonomous ship looks like a product of a special design. Judging by the photo, it is equipped with an electro-optical camera, a laser rangefinder and two steel protrusions on the nose, which can be detonators or contactors for an explosive device.

Analysts suggest that the flat panel installed at the stern could be a satellite antenna for communication and remote control. The side of the boat is marked with the inscription “4,5 VZNSI”.

Were 7 “Black Cats” used at Sevastopol Bay on Saturday morning? Or something more powerful? This is still unclear.

Cyberspec News, [10/29/2022 4:36 PM]
Acc to reliable reports, Warmate kamikaze drones of Polish origin participated in the pre-morning raid. A

During the “Warmate” development, along with the Warsaw company WB Electronics, the specialists of the Ukrainian company Cesara also participated most actively. Their joint work on creating a strike UAV was successfully completed in 2014. Serial production has been launched in Poland since 2015.

Lithuania bought at least 37 of them from the Poles and passed them on to Kiev at the end of August. On September 7, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov announced in his Telegram channel that the entire shipment has already been received.

So why use Warmate?
It is made of composite materials, which provides low radar visibility. A tiny thing, in fact, perfectly suitable for the sabotage activities of Special Operations Forces. Because even a teenager can carry it in a backpack. weighs only 5.3kg

The maximum flight duration of a kamikaze drone is only 60 minutes. And the maximum range of stable operation of its control system is up to 12 kilometers. This means that if on Saturday the enemy really unleashed one or more Warmates to attack Sevastopol, then its operator with the appropriate equipment was either in the city itself or in its immediate vicinity.

Probably, everything looked about the same on the night of September 27 when the Balaklava TPP was hit from the air by the same low-power kamikaze drone in the vicinity of Sevastopol. Then, let me remind you, the damage to the station was extremely insignificant. One transformer was disabled, which was already not working and was on preventive maintenance. This was announced by the governor of the region Mikhail Razvozhaev.

Most likely, both at Balaklava and in the main base of the Black Sea Fleet, we got off relatively easily due to the relatively low power of the Warmate warhead. After all, on Saturday, the only ammunition that reached Sevastopol collapsed on the Ship’s side, not far from the local vocational school on Khruleva Street. And only took out the window panes of the building.
But the very place of the UAV crash (if it was not shot down by electronic warfare or anti-aircraft fire and did not fall randomly) suggests that the true target was the 13th ship repair plant of the Black Sea Fleet, located in Kilen Bay. The only enterprise in these parts that can fully return ships to combat readiness.

But outwardly such a modest combat result of the operation is it legitimate to consider it a complete failure?

I’m not sure. Because the US strategic recon drone RQ-4B-40 Global Hawk was flying over international waters near Sevastopol all night from Friday to Saturday. It took off from a NATO airbase near Catania, Sicily.

What, perhaps, does such an amazing synchronicity of actions of our enemies indicate?

The organizers of the operation probably wanted to make the entire air defense system of the main base work with maximum effect and the Recon drone could record air-def positions and frequencies.

So we can likely expect another raid, perhaps of a larger scale in the future

I say this a lot because I mean it. We run many deficits but the biggest one, the most difficult to overcome, is genuine humility.

Coming to possess genuine humility is a lesson *much* easier to learn than be taught and we are all about to be taught a lesson we’ll never forget. It might kill a lot of us.

Russia’s Agricultural Minister said they have 500,000tons of Russian grain to export this year to completely replace Ukrainian grain. He also stated that grain will be free for the poorest countries that apply for it in the next 4 months.

I guess the West doesn’t get it, Russia is self sufficient, they have everything the West needs.

…and Vlad keeps on saying Checkmate, he holds all the cards and there is nothing the West can do.

The Russians have been regularly attacking Odessa and other parts of Southern Ukraine using drones, thats “the corridor”, and those ships based in Sebastopol have been firing missiles at Ukraine.

Russia is a gang of dickheads, slapping people around, and then getting offended when they are slapped back.

I suspect the Ukrainians still have much more grain than that from this years harvest, ready to ship.

The Ukrainian grain harvest estimate for 2022 was 41 million tons. That was as of April this year. What with the war, it probably came to quite a lot less, but still a vast number.

Russia can certainly afford to lose this war.
Russia still has all the (non military) assets it had in Feb 2022. It can make lots of money selling commodities, for a very long time, even if it doesnt reform its mismanaged domestic economy and social system. It will take several hits from losing markets, falling prices, and reputational loss in many areas, but there is no reason it shouldnt survive and recover, eventually.

Putin however cant afford to lose this war. Putin is not Russia.

Should have been suspended long ago given most of the grain going out was NOT going to poor nations that needed the grain, it was going to the rich greedy European nations who had placed sanctions on Russia....

This is interesting...

The semiconductor shortage is now officially morphed into a semiconductor glut!

https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/The-Global-Semiconductor-Shortage-Is-Now-Becoming-A-Glut.html

The attempt to stymie the flow of advanced chips into Russia was already a desperate and hopeless endeavor to begin with, but falling semiconductor prices mean that anybody willing to sell to Russia through intermediaries will be able to earn a premium while their competitors face unsold stock.

Here’s an earlier article from Politico for reference:

But some American national security veterans disagree with the optimistic assessment from U.S. President Joe Biden’s team. They say Western governments have little ability to stop other regimes — particularly China — from transferring microchips to Russia.

The controls on chips “are about as tight as a screen door,” said Matthew Turpin, the U.S. National Security Council director for China from 2018 to 2019. “China and Russia share a 4,300-kilometer border. There is absolutely no way we could detect if those chips are passed from China to Russia.”

The U.S. Commerce Department has repeatedly said it has seen no evidence that China is transferring technologies to Russia, which could open Beijing to severe sanctions. But the Chinese government has also said it would put no new limits on its commercial relationship with Russia, and Turpin and others say there is almost no way Western governments can be certain of their behavior.

Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security, which oversees tech sanctions, has “fewer than 10 ‘inspectors’ in China which are supposed to determine whether chips have been diverted to Chinese military use,” Turpin said, adding that “we are not effective in inspections” because the Chinese government requires prior warning.

....

Frankly, any hope that the West had of preventing Russia from obtaining semiconductors just went out the window... er... screen door.

🔻The United States has lost its leadership in nuclear technology, according to the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi. 🇺🇸

He stated this, speaking on Friday at the Carnegie Endowment in the United States. Grossi said that Russia is the main supplier of nuclear technology, and China is also active in this area. “This is a problem for America. The USA has traditionally been a leader, but it has lost these leadership positions,” Grossi said.
