As crime continues to plague Americans in cities large and small, violent crimes involving juveniles continue to grab headlines and frustrate local leaders and law enforcement as one expert says teens simply are not deterred from crime because of the light consequences that have become the new norm in many areas.
In response to teen violence, some have blamed police staffing shortages that critics say were made worse by the Defund the Police movement, progressive bail and criminal justice reforms, as well as teens scoffing at authorities for young people's brazen acts of violence, often in broad daylight.
"Unfortunately, the penalties aren't scary for these kids," Joseph Giacalone, an adjunct professor and the former commanding officer of the NYPD’s Bronx Cold Case Squad, told Fox News Digital.
He added that a lack of discipline in schools and possible familial dynamics could also be contributors.
"The parents aren't taking care of things," he said. "The schools aren't taking care of things, and then the police have to deal with them … and meanwhile they had no [child] rearing at home, no discipline at home and at school, and they want to know why kids are acting out."
Experts told Fox News Digital that in Philadelphia one constant for juvenile offenders arrested for violent crimes was that many had prior arrests for carjacking or gun crimes. Some attributed that to policies that release suspects back onto the streets after they are arrested, allowing them to re-offend with little-to-no consequences.
In Philadelphia, three teenage boys last month were part of a squad of shooters who opened fire near a high school. And in Los Angeles, a teen allegedly shot and killed a rapper with the help of his father during a robbery.

For a great many reasons, there are one or more generations that are largely lost. Our society has gone insane and we will be paying the price for this for decades.
Clockwork Orange.

In my city today, a 13 year old boy pulled a gun on a dentist office receptionist at 10am.
A 13 dang year old!!
Yep. We’re there.
We saw them as warnings. Democrats embraced them as instruction manuals.
Intact families needed.
I hate to say this, but harsher penalties will only slightly improve things. A rap sheet in the ghetto is cred. There’s also greater cred in increasing order: juvenile detention, county, state and federal prisons. What will make a bigger difference is having two parents (male & female), religious instruction at church, and teachers that are actually literate and being allowed to properly discipline very small to large problems at school. All this juvenile crime starts with disrespect in school towards teachers, other students and themselves. While that isn’t a crime, it does require corrective action.
Yup
Thats why for me the age of the murderer makes zero difference. And also the death penalty for all murderers, screw their age and their sex.
You don’t throw the book at them, but there has to be a serious consequence the first time to act as a deterrent. You don’t take what they did seriously, then neither will they.
A stable family with two parents helps, too.
Bring back “Scared Straight”.
The Supremes banned the death penalty for juveniles. It’s time they reversed that ridiculous stance. If you’re old enough to murder, you’re old enough to swing for the offense.
People aren't getting married, they're shacking up, many single moms after the deadbeat dad takes off. Families don't get together as once did every month at least. Now you'll be lucky they get together for Christmas.
I won't even get into the educational system , enough to say it's completely out of control in the classrooms.
And why should kids give a crap when they know mothers are taking their brothers and sisters live via abortion every day.
Crime will virtually end overnight, and there will be no need for the cost of prisons.
“No sht Sherlock” - said constipated Watson.
Teen violence. I know we aren’t allowed to say certain things about these so called teens.
“many had prior arrests for carjacking or gun crimes.”
The system knows the kids are screwing up big time.
A gun crime or carjacking should always be publicly tried in adult court. And no out at 18.
Bind their feet with feet cuffs- no prison, but the feet will not be more than two feet apart for a year or more.
And if the feet cuffs are removed illegally - this is a chisel and this is a hammer, over there are your freedom stones, they need to be dressed. One dressed stone gets you breakfast, a second lunch, and two more dinner. Another can get you a shower.
