A Russian court on Tuesday rejected Brittney Griner’s appeal after the jailed WNBA star begged for forgiveness for her “mistake” — upholding her nine-year sentence on drug charges.
Griner and her lawyers had asked for acquittal or at least a more lenient sentence, which they said was disproportionate to the offense and at odds with Russian judicial practice.
The presiding judge said the verdict was upheld “without changes” except for the counting of time served in pre-trial detention as part of the sentence. Griner is now expected to be moved to a penal colony.
The US chargee d’affaires in Moscow, Elizabeth Rood, who attended the hearing, called the sentence “excessive and disproportionate.”

Much as I despise Putin, Russia nonetheless has very clear laws about drug use... play stupid games over there, you win stupid prizes.

International travel can be extremely costly if you don’t know the laws. Heck, the same is true between the member countries of the US. a 19ish year old “boy” from Arizona, who was a competitive sharpshooter, was caught with his gun in his trunk while driving through New Jersey on his way to his first year of college.
He went to prison. I believe he was eventually pardoned, but it was shocking that Chris Christy refused to pardon him - until this became national news.
But travelling can be very dangerous if you live on the fringe of legality.
If Trump were in office where he belongs, Vlad would never have invaded Ukraine, and Trump would have long since made a deal with Vlad to release those two people and maybe others and sent his personal aeroplane to retrieve them.
