Very few people in the US (or even Spain, thanks to the Socialists) know anything about the things that finally set off Franco’s decision to fight back.

One of the other things was voter suppression (of the conservative rural population) and vote manipulation by the radical left in Northern Spain, which unfortunately was not challenged by the conservative parties (even though everybody knew it was a fraud). The Left learned from the Spanish Civil War and the overthrow of Allende by General Pinochet forty years later never to let their enemies abide in a country's armed forces. As far back as the Cold War, the top echelons of the American military became dominated by men who joined Establishment clubs like the Council of Foreign Relations. An Ivy League graduate degree became a ticket to advancement to general or admiral. The old school generals like George Patton, Douglas MacArthur, and Curtis LeMay would not be found in the flag ranks from the Vietnam era to the present. The political generals knew what would lead to promotions and post-career sinecures in the defense industry or think tanks.

What is worse, the "perfumed princes" of the 1960-2010 era were replaced by "woke" generals to whom devotion to God and country is at best anachronistic and at worst racist, sexist, xenophobic, etc. The "woke" attitude has pushed down the ranks, as patriotic junior officers and noncommissioned officers resign upon the end of their contracts.

There are no Francos or Pinochets in the wings. To think otherwise is to indulge in fantasy.
