Her successor – due to be announced next week – will be the country´s third Prime Minister this year. So what on earth caused this mess? There are a number of reasons. But some of them are ones that America could learn from.
SNIP
All of the Western world is now suffering economic turmoil and cost of living crises. Nobody who is in power is going to look good at such a time. But it was the choice of politicians in Britain – as it was in America – to pump out free money since 2008. We did so under the apparent belief that the costs of money-printing would never arrive. Then, before that money splurge had even finished we had another one – the great COVID money splurge. Then on top of that, we had the costs coming from the war in Ukraine. Like so many politicians in this country, Liz Truss tried to get through this by promising people more of everything.
SNIP
Conservatives used to taunt the leftover about their belief in a magic money tree. But recent years have shown that politicians on the right are just as able as those on the left to borrow like there´s no tomorrow.

American Dems: Since when?
Do you believe in unlimited government spending?
What does that expression mean: ‘based’?
I think I know, but didn’t want to ask anybody in the real world.
Why did she quit?
Lettuce outlasts Truss.
Congrats to the shortest PM in UK history.
Proven untrustworthy.
But as far as her being fiscally responsible, that should be viewed as a good things. I don't understand why so-called conservatives now support unlimited spending.
Its precisely because she overrode Kwarteng on key aspects of the mini budget (and treated it as a mini budget when it clearly was a comprehensive rewrite) that she had to go.
Usually the Tories rat out on fiscal irresponsibility, uncosted spending plans, major reforms covered up as “tidying up exercises” / “instruments” instead of bills etc. All things that evidence the Labour Party beimg unfit to govern.
And Truss, in under 30 days, crashed tgd economy by doing all the same things that they had said made Corbyn unelectable.
And then she doubled down on tax cuts for everybody, BUT ESPECIALLY THE RICHEST CORPORATES AND THE TOP 5%.
No matter how bad the loony left spending plans are, they are expected to consult the Bank of England and the Office for Budget Responsibility to ensure they don’t have anything so revolutionary in the plans that it’ll force a run on the banks, send interest rates soaring etc.
There is literally not one thing Truss did right. Kwarteng pushed back and got overruled by her, then she sacked him ehen her plans crashed.
This isn’t an issue of her ideology beimg wrong, it’s simply that her execution of it was so hamfisted that even Jeremy Corbyn wouldn’t have messed it up that bad.
Who does England think they are? Italy? ... !
The Democrats can do it because they’re stupid and uncaring.
