U.S. Ratifies Global Treaty to Curb Climate-Warming Chemicals in Air Conditioning, Refrigeration

The Senate has voted to ratify a global climate treaty that will phase down the use and production of hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, the climate-warming chemicals widely used in air conditioning and refrigeration.

The Senate voted 69-27 on Wednesday to move forward the 2016 Kigali Amendment, an amendment to the 1987 Montreal Protocol climate treaty that dramatically curbs the use of HFCs, which are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide at heating up the Earth. Forty-eight Democrats and 21 Republicans voted in favor; four members of the Senate did not vote.

“This is a win-win in our fight against climate change and will go a long way to battle rising global temperatures while also creating tens of thousands of good-paying American jobs,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Wednesday.

Shortly after taking office, President Joe Biden issued an executive order requesting that Congress ratify the Kigali Amendment, among a series of other federal actions to reduce domestic greenhouse gas emissions.

Another air conditioning refrigerant phaseout! I don't remember seeing this in the news. First R-12, then R-22 and now R-410a starting in 2023. R-12 and R-22 were phased out because they were claimed to deplete the ozone layer. R-410a doesn't deplete the ozone layer but is claimed to be a potent greenhouse gas. Some of the replacements being considered are mildly flammable. Here is a discussion on replacements being considered.

The 27 Republicans voting for the Kigali Amendment to the Treaty are listed here.

R12 was as important as soap for the building of the prosperity and health we enjoy today. Banning it was based on lies like DDT. Just another BS “we gotta do something” to save the planet and empower the government at the expense of people.

US Senators steal enough money that they will always have air conditioning.

I guess I should order some more R410A while I can.

They’ll eventually create and mandate a new safe refrigeration chemical, it will likely be something that will only work if it’s over 88 degrees.

A lot of companies are already using Propane again for their smaller refrigeration systems, I can’t wait til we get the nightly stories of people blowing themselves up while trying to fix their AC or fridge...

In the US, some medications for asthma and other respiratory issues that used CFCs were taken from the market or changed to where they were far less effective. This would probably do the same thing again.

Also, don’t forget that this stuff is used in a heat pump, too.

I suppose the green weenies want us to just jam electricity through a coil for heat, no matter how inefficient it is. Great news for Mother Earth.

2016 Kigali Amendment

Pikers! This amendment was named for the capital of Rwanda. The Rwandans were satisfied with killing only 1/13th of their population.

Our global warming masters want much more than that!

Ammonia cooling systems for everyone!

The cynic ine wonders if the patent on the now-illegal refrigerant has expired and the chemical companies have a new one for you to buy.
